Thank you for visiting Spokane Public Schools' website. The board of directors is proud to welcome you as you explore the site, which will give you a glimpse into the exciting educational journey our community provides for the more than 29,000 students we serve each day.
The board of directors is a publicly elected, volunteer board ultimately responsible to the community for the successful implementation of the school district's mission: educating the children of Spokane.
The school board serves as a conduit of information to the district, guiding the expectations of the community into action, and also as an information source to the community, explaining how policy decisions influence teaching and learning. The board also takes an active role in state and national organizations, focusing on legislative, budget and policy issues impacting all our children.
Meetings
The school board meets the second
and fourth Wednesdays of each month. Meetings are held at
7 p.m. September through May, and at noon beginning with the
second meeting in June. On holidays, or when a conflict occurs,
a meeting may be held at an alternate time and/or date.
Through January 2008, board meetings are being held
at locations throughout the district. Click here for
a schedule. Study sessions are sometimes scheduled in advance
of regular meetings to examine complex proposals and issues.
These sessions are usually held in the fourth floor conference
room of the district's Administration Building.
The agenda for each meeting is available at the school board
meeting and online. To receive the board agenda
by mail, contact the school board secretary at 354-7364.
Public participation
All regular board meetings and study sessions are open to
the public. School board members encourage public participation.
Citizens wanting to address the board should complete a yellow
card, available on the north side of the board meeting rooms.
The school board president will invite public comment when
the item of interest is on the agenda during the time set
aside for public comments.
The board of directors works hard to provide a variety of ways
for the community to be engaged in the educational process.
For example, each school elects two citizen representatives
- one voting member, and one alternate - to the Citizens Advisory
Committee (CAC) which maintains a two-way dialogue with the
board, sharing ideas and opinions of the schools and their
communities. At the request of the school board, the CAC researches
timely issues and advises the board of its findings.
We as a board are proud of the many hard-working, professional staff we have creating the type of learning environment we all wish for our children. As community representatives, we know that the educational legacy we leave here in Spokane has a long-ranging impact. Thank you for your continued support and interest in Spokane Public Schools.
