Integers

Definition: any of the natural numbers (1,2,3,4,5.....), the negative of these numbers, or zero.

The first thing usually taught when learning about the addition of negative and positive integers is absolute value.  However, we are going to bypass that for now.  If you'd like to learn about absolute value, try this Web sites:   Adding Integers.

This is one way to work with the addition of positive and negative integers:

If you have a negative integer, then you move to the left on the number line that number of spaces.  If you have a positive integer, then you move to the right on the number line that number of spaces.

Example #1:

-8 + 10 = n

-8 + 10 = 2

Example #2:

9 + -11 = n

9 + -11 = -2

More examples:

18 + -5 = 13
-4 + -4 = -8
-17 + 5 = -12
13 + -1 = 12
-70 + 15 = - 55
