Welcome to the Construction Career Day planning guide.  This will serve as both your workbook and encyclopedia of information over the coming months as we work together to plan the Construction Career Day in Spokane.  Below is a brief overview of the Construction Career Day initiative and what your role will be in the planning process.

What is Construction Career Day?
Construction Career Day is a campaign offered through the Washington State Department of Transportation to encourage 11th and 12th grade high school students to explore employment and apprenticeship in the construction trades in their community.

What is the event?
The Construction Career Day will take the form of a hands-on, exploratory event in a large venue to showcase heavy equipment utilized by the Department of Transportation.  Students in grades 11th and 12th will spend the day as participants in operation of heavy equipment, hands-on demos in the trades offered through apprenticeship and information about employment and educational opportunities that support the trades.

How are we planning the event?
To ensure that Construction Career Day event are as organized as possible a large group of community members are meeting to organize, produce and promote the event.  These members include (but are not limited to) Department of Transportation, Community Colleges of Spokane, ESD 101, Spokane Public Schools, Associated General Contractors, Spokane Area Apprenticeship Training Coordinators.

What do you want me to do?
We like your advice, your contacts and any help you can give us to make this a great event for Spokane.

Sessions/Rotation:  After the safety orientation is complete, your group will be sent to their beginning activity (Heavy Equipment Operation). A horn will be sounded when it is time to move to your next station (Hands-On Demo). You will receive an agenda of activities and a map to lead your group.

Lunch:  Lunch will be provided for all students and chaperones.  The lunch will be catered by Longhorn BBQ and will include a drink.  If you have any students with known food allergies, please advise them to bring their own lunch. As your group enters lunch they will return their hard hats and use their lunch ticket (nametag) to receive lunch.  Each student will be given a bag full of construction related information and promotional items.

Transportation
Each school district is responsible for coordinating their own transportation.  Bussing costs will be reimbursed to each school district after the event through funding from WSDOT.  Schools will be asked to submit a copy of their bussing invoice and their student roster for reimbursement.  Exact details for reimbursement will be given closer to the event.
