Career & Technical Education
CAREER FOCUS OVERVIEW

This document aligns the Career Focus curriculum to the rigorous standards identified by the Spokane Public Schools' Strategic Plan, Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements, SCANS Competencies, Washington State Vocational-Technical Education Program Standards and the National Career Development Guidelines. The primary purpose of these correlations is to ensure that the overall Career Focus curriculum is in alignment with the high local, state and national expectations.

The identified learning competencies were developed based on the learning opportunities available with current Career Focus business partners. These business sites include:

  • Deaconess Medical Center
  • Holy Family Hospital
  • Rockwood Clinic
  • Sacred Heart Medical Center
  • Spokane Public Schools
  • Veterans Affairs Medical Center
  • WestCoast Hospitality Corporation

This is a working document and is not complete. Many competencies have not been correlated with all of the benchmarks as set forth. These are indicated by blank squares. Squares with an “r” denote that no correlation exists with the identified standard. Specifically defined correlations are shown with a number. If a correlation is indicated, it does not mean that the competency meets all the requirements of the essential learnings, but that it contributes significantly to the specified learning indicator. The definition for each correlation number can be found in the appendix sections at the end.

This curriculum is designed to challenge students and provide opportunities for exposure to a variety of occupations identified by the five Spokane Public Schools identified career pathways. The potential value of a Career Focus experience mandates that the competencies meet or exceed benchmark standards.
