HARASSMENT

Chase Middle School is committed to the creation of a positive school climate and therefore has a ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY against harassment. Any student who engages in physical, verbal, social, or emotional harassment that occurs over a period of time will be guilty of BULLYING and/or INTIMIDATION. Harassment occurring on school grounds during the school day, or off school grounds at a school activity or event MAY BE GROUNDS FOR DISCIPLINE.

2nd offense: In-school suspension from one to three days,, parent and administrator conference, contract with the victim.

         3rd offense: Out-of-school suspension for 3 to 10 days.

         4th offense: Out-of-school suspension for 11 to 90 days.

STUDENT ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUG USE/ABUSE

We all recognize that the use/abuse of alcohol, narcotics, and other drugs represents a real health danger. It also interferes with the educational process and contributes to disruptive behavior in school. We are committed to keeping Chase a safe, drug-free school. Students will not possess, use, deliver, sell, or offer to sell any illicit drugs or alcohol. Further, students will not be in possession of drug paraphernalia. This expectation is a top priority for all members of the Chase educational community and will be rigorously enforced. Violation of this policy will result in immediate disciplinary action as follows:

POSSESSION OR USE OF ALCOHOL OR ILLICIT DRUGS

FIRST OFFENSE: Mandatory two-day out-of-school suspension AND agreement to complete a four-session educational intervention class or agreement to complete an assessment by a certified drug/alcohol counselor. Failure to complete the intervention class or agree to assessment will result in an additional five-day out-of-school suspension.

SECOND OFFENSE WITHIN THE NEXT TWO YEARS: Mandatory long-term out-of-school suspension.

THIRD OFFENSE WITHIN THE NEXT TWO YEARS: Expulsion from all Spokane Public Schools.

DISTRIBUTE, SELL, OR OFFER TO SELL ALCOHOL, NARCOTICS, OR ILLICIT DRUGS

FIRST OFFENSE: Expulsion from all Spokane Public Schools.

SMOKING

State law forbids the use of tobacco products at any time in the school building or on school grounds. This applies to all school-sponsored activities as well as the regular school day.

FIRST OFFENSE: Parent conference, short-term out-of-school suspension, referral to SAS for counseling, agreement to participate in a two-session tobacco education intervention program.

SECOND OFFENSE: Parent conference, short-term out-of-school suspension (up to 10 days), referral to SAS for counseling.

        THIRD OFFENSE:  Long-term out-of-school suspension.

FIREARMS AND OTHER DANGEROUS WEAPONS

We are deeply concerned regarding the increasing violence at all levels of society. We are proud that violence has not been a serious problem here at Chase. In a changing society. however, we want to make every effort to be proactive in keeping our school safe. Our staff is dedicated to working with parents, police, and lawmakers to create the safest possible environment.

Washington state law mandates that any student bringing a firearm to school, onto a school bus, or to any school-sponsored event must be expelled from all Washington State schools. The firearm need not be loaded, nor even in operating condition.

In a similar law, a tougher stand against dangerous weapons is now in effect. Please carefully read the list below and keep these items where your student cannot access them without your permission.
