New Student Representatives to the Board
Sharing a student perspective with school board members this year will be Lee Smoot, from Rogers High School, and Jordan Clark, from Lewis and Clark High School.
For the past three years, students have been invited to apply for a position as student representative to the board. Though they don't vote, the students do provide a valuable viewpoint.
Smoot said the main reason she wanted to be a student representative is to get a good look at the inner workings of Spokane Public Schools.
"I wanted to see how actions were brought to the classroom and to get a better understanding of school infrastructure," she said. "Also, I think I'll be able to equally represent all the students in our district and what's best for them."
Clark also thought that being a student representative would be a great way to be an advocate for all students. At the end of the year, he hopes to be able to look back and say the experience was fun.
"And I hope that in some way I've made a difference in the school system," he said. "Just a small difference to someone or something."
Media can interview the new student representatives tonight at 6:45 p.m., prior to the 7 p.m. school board meeting.
