Virtual learning connects students with classes

It’s not a passing trend.

In 2001, an estimated 45,000 U.S. students enrolled in a virtual school course. In 2002, that number jumped to 178,500 students in 88 virtual schools.

Today there are more than 125 virtual K-12 programs throughout the nation, serving more than 1 million students.

Spokane Virtual Learning (SVL), Spokane Public Schools’ new online learning program, provides unique opportunities for students. With SVL, students have access to the 24/7 classroom that accommodates their busy schedules.

“The ‘3 Rs’ of the 21st century are the ability to find and use information, the ability to communicate effectively, and the ability to form meaningful working relationships,” said SVL Coordinator Sharon Johnston. “Spokane Virtual Learning helps students refine all of these skills.”

Currently the new program has 80 students in 95 course slots, meaning that some students are enrolled in more than one SVL course. Openings are available in the following Advanced Placement courses:
AP English Language and Composition
AP Statistics
AP English Literature and Composition
AP US Government (a semester course that begins November 7).

In November, SVL will begin the development of 12 additional courses that will launch in fall 2006.
