April 19 - 20, 2013

  • Your child is invited to take part in a voluntary Science/STEM fair.  This is an exciting even that encourages students to think like young scientists.  During the next month, your child can design a science project that uses the scientific method, research to solve a problem, or learn more about something that they are interested in.

Please read through the following information and fill out the entry form.  All entry forms are due by Friday, March 31, 2023.

Types of Projects

  • Students can get help at home; however, the hope is that the student is the one who takes the lead
  • Students can choose to do an:
    • Individual Project
    • Team Project (with a partner)
    • Family Project

Three types of projects you can do:

  • Model with Report Project (prop with a report) - This could include making a model of something and explaining how the parts work.  For example, you might make a model of a heart and explain how each part works.  You could also display a scientific collection such as seashells, feathers or seeds.  Be sure to include a report that describes what you have learned by reading or observing, and would include text, pictures, drawings, or other information mounted on a tri-fold board.  Examples include a model of the solar system, hurricanes, parts of a butterfly, etc.
  • Engineering Project (you build it) - A constructed scientific device or something built that helps solve a problem.  Examples might include a flishlight with different colored lenses, a suspension bridge made from toothpicks and gumdrops that can hold several toy cars, or a miniature robot that can carry a small load a distance of 12 inches.  This type of project will also include a tri-fold board with an explanation of your engineering process-your design, 1st build, test, revise/fix, and test again description.  You may also include scientific facts about how/why your project works.
  • Experiment Project (research & testing) - This involves testing a hypothesis or answering a question using the scientific method.  This type of project asks a question, predicts the answer, has a plan to test to find the answer using materials, and finally shows results, and makes a conclusion about the question.  The steps of your experiment process should be mounted on a tri-fold board and should also include a graph or chart of results and a conclusion.  Examples for this category include:  Do plants grow taller by the window, under a grow light, or by a heater?  What happens to eggshells soaked in soda, iced tea, or a sports drink for 2 weeks?

General Guidelines:

  • Any branch of science is open
  • The actual project must be self-supporting and should be no longer than 3 ft wide and 2 ft deep.  If you think that the project might take up more space, or requires a different type of space, please write those needs down on your entry form
  • Make sure you have cleaning supplies - ie:  towels if your project causes a mess after a demonstration
  • Things that are NOT ALLOWED:  live animals, sharp edges, dangerious equiment, flammable or explosive materials, poisons, toxins or assembled kits
  • Start early and be prepared to share the project.  we ask that you encourage your child and monitor their progress along the way.  Guide them by asking questions and helping if needed on tasks requiring adult skill
  • If you need help with materials, please list those needs on the entry form.  We will do our best to help you find them

Event Information

April 19

  • Students can bring their projects to school in the morning to setup in the gym
  • Or they can setup during the day during their scheduled time - ASB will be on hand to help
  • 9:00 am Shadle Park HS Science students will judge the projects
    • Students will stand by their projects and present them to the judges
    • Parents/guardians are not allowed in the gym during judging

April 20

  • Ribbons will be placed on student's tri-fold project boards by Thursday morning
  • A few special awards will be announced schoolwide on Thursday morning
  • Family Science Night - 5:30-7:30
    • Families can tour the science fair project in the gym
    • Mobius Science Center will be there with several exhibits
  • Projects will be taken home at the end of the Family Science Night activity
    • If you can't attend the night event, the project will need to be taken home after school on Thursday 4/20
