Overview of Elementary Literacy Programs
READING
Spokane Public Schools maintains a theoretical belief that
reading is a complex process heavily involved with writing, listening,
and speaking across all content areas. The goal of the reading
program is to ensure all students become lifelong readers.

WRITING
The goal of the elementary writing program is to provide
all children with opportunities to become writers. The writing
program consists of a three-pronged approach: the writing process;
traits of quality writing; and, forms and features of text.

SPELLING
The framework of the elementary spelling program focuses
on spelling as a thinking process not a rote learning task.
Spelling is a writer's tool. The need to spell is directly
linked to reading and writing.

COMMUNICATION
The communication framework focuses on two areas: using
listening and observation skills to gain understanding; and, communicating
ideas clearly and effectively. This may include projects using
visual literacy, oral presentations, dramatic presentations, and
technology. |
