It’s a promise kept. The final project of the 1998 school
bond is now complete. Monies from the 1998 bond were used to complete
the last remaining phase of the Lewis and Clark High School project
and successfully addressed a major safety concern there.
Spokane Public Schools secured property in the block between 5th
and 6th avenues and Washington and Stevens streets. Construction
of a playfield for Lewis and Clark Fitness and Health classes began
in late March. The project provided improved student safety as students
no longer have to walk across busy city streets to get to and from
fitness and health classes conducted at the old playfield located
at 4th and Browne.
Northwest Architecture Company of Spokane prepared the playfield
design and oversaw this final phase of the Lewis and Clark modernization
and expansion project. Half Moon Construction, also of Spokane,
performed the work on the project, which began March 31, 2003.
"Spokane voters supported the 1998 bond overwhelmingly and
we promised them that as part of that measure, we would acquire
sufficient property to ensure that Lewis and Clark students would
have a closer outdoor fitness and health playfield," says Associate
Superintendent of School Support Services Dr. Mark Anderson. "This
new site ensures that students will no longer have to walk eight
blocks and cross several arterials just to get to an outdoor health
and fitness playfield for instruction."
Throughout last spring, the site was cleared and excavated. During
the summer, retaining walls, irrigation systems, and sod were installed.
Students began using the playfield at the start of school this fall.
All projects from the 1998 bond were completed on time and on budget,
a performance record that was shared with voters during last spring’s
successful 2003 school bond campaign.
