| Not
only do these individuals perform the routine day-to-day
cleaning, but they also do project work such as striping,
waxing and buffing of vinyl and concrete floors, stain
removal and shampooing of carpets, furniture relocation,
snow and ice removal, and numerous other tasks in support
of the educational staff and community. The building
custodians also care for the 110 acres of parking lots,
sidewalks and walkways around their buildings, and provide
services for over 17,000 after-school community activities
per year (adult education, recreational, social, and civic
activities, etc.). Finally, in order to improve
the effectiveness of support to our customers, the custodial
staff is continuing to transition more and more of their
routine paper processes to computerized systems. They
are now able to order supplies, control heating, air-conditioning
and lighting systems, write work orders, communicate,
access information such as hazardous chemicals, handling,
storage and personal protective equipment data, and
complete other vital safety training using our networked
computer systems.
