Last
Friday, (April 25, 2008), was the National Day of Silence. This day was created
by teens to address the bullying, name calling, and harassment of LBGT (lesbian,
bi, gay, and transgender, as well as assumed) students, and those who have been
silenced in the fear of being ridiculed for their religious or other views.
This year’s Day of Silence was in honor of Lawrence King, a California
8th-grader who was shot and killed February 12th by a classmate because of his
sexual orientation and gender expression. To show our support, the Ferris T.A.P.
(Teens Against Prejudice) group created a “Wall of Silence” for
all students to sign and write how they have been silenced. Ribbons and explanation
cards were also passed out so students could show their support throughout the
day. Thank you to all the students who chose to wear those ribbons!
If you would like to become involved in the Ferris T.A.P. group, we invite
you to join us Thursday mornings in P109. We will be adding a webpage to the
Ferris website under the “Extracurricular, Ferris Clubs” section
shortly!
