BYTE OF NEWS

  FRANKLIN ELEMENTARY

OCTOBER 19, 2001

FALL IS HERE!

We are 34 days into the school year!  Students are into their routine and teachers are looking forward to volunteer parents who have the time to work in the classroom!  Calendars are posted in the core room showing where you are needed for each class.  If you are unsure of what would be a good time to help out you can contact your classroom coordinator.

Recess duty is going well and thank you to everyone who is volunteering for this very important time!  Everyone benefits from this extra time!  We need parents between 12:30pm –1pm.  Sign up sheet is in the core room.

The weather is changing and with the addition of added clothing don’t forget to label your child’s coats, gloves/mittens and even boots!  Many students end up with the same ones and it can be confusing when they are in a hurry to head outside!

The roster is out.  It is on BRIGHT yellow paper.  There are a “few” mistakes that I have corrected and a new roster will be sent out next Wednesday, October 24.  If there are mistakes to your name, address, phone number, spelling, etc., you need to contact Lisa Regehr.  The new roster will be on the same BRIGHT yellow paper.

PICTURES, PICTURES, PICTURES!  Next Thursday is picture day.  The make up day will be December 6th.

Ola!  Several students are involved in learning a second language.  They are either studying Spanish or Russian.  Classes are held in both the mornings and afternoons.

If you have not done so please turn in your 90 hour contract.  This was sent home in your child’s backpack two weeks ago.  Place in Classroom Coordinators box in core room.

Remember you need keep working on your hours each month so you don’t fall behind.  A good rule of thumb would be to strive for 10 hours each month.  This breaks down to about 2 ½ hours each week.  For those who can’t make it into the classroom several committees still need help.  For questions or concerns on your hours contact your classroom coordinators or Hours coordinator Evelyn Hamann.

APPLE FAMILY HAYRIDE AND POTLUCK!

OK all you folk, when was the last time you got to roll around in the hay for fun?  There is going to be a FUN Hay ride on Sunday, October 28th.  The WHOLE family is invited, even older sibs.  It will be at Mont. Lamm Belgian  which is a unique facility located near Deer Park .  We will be pulled by Belgian Horses and afterwards to warm up there will be a potluck in the Barn.  Anyone have a banjo? The ACLU made inquiries into the APPLE program as a result of a family complaining about the APPLE program.  There is a settlement but uncertain whether is a signed agreement.  But the settlement is district wide.  The district is requiring a nondiscrimination statement on all District distributed material.  The executive committee is looking at creating a committee that will assist APPLE in supporting the District in this settlement.  Sonia will remain after the meeting to answer any questions.

APPLE Committee Chairs introduced themselves and provided a brief description of their committee.  (Mark explained that the Exec Comm. might interrupt a person in order to keep the meeting going).

Would like each committee to have a mentoring process in place.  The committee chairs should look at a method of succession within each committee.

Please sign up to work on a committee after Apple Action meeting.

Dawnelle Shaw:  Auction is the only APPLE fund-raiser for the year.  The Auction Committee is taking a team approach this year.

March 3, 2001 is the date of the Auction.  First committee meeting is planned for October.  The committee will put ideas in the core room as well as additional information about the auction.
