“HAPPY THANKSGIVING”
What’s New or
Happening....
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
OPENING
We will be
voting for a new executive committee member at the December 2nd
Apple Action Meeting. The
new member would take over starting in January 2004.
If you are interested in being on this committee or know of someone you
can contact any one of the executive members before the next meeting.
HOURS UPDATE
Sometime
during the last week of school in December you will be receiving a letter from
your Classroom Coordinators showing the number of hours and meetings you have
accumulated through November 30th.
Please review carefully and contact our hours coordinator Stacy Kloth for
any discrepancies.

LITERACY TRAINING CLASSES
There is one more FREE Class. All that is needed is to sign in at the library. Arrive early though because last year seating was tight! If you have any questions please contact Gladys Evans.
Session 3: Nov 21 10:30am-12:30pm Shadle Public Library
The Rockford Barn Dance was a lot of fun! There were lots of food and plenty of homemade ice cream made by your children for the event! We had folk dancing upstairs and then everyone went over to the park for a Bon Fire to toast marshmallows and pop some popcorn. The weather was perfect and the adults and kids had a great time! Thank you for the food and good company! Thanks to Kim & Marc Hill, Nancy Janzen and Mark Iverson and anyone else who helped with set up and clean up!
ICE SKATING CELEBRATION
This year
the annual all APPLE Ice Skating Celebration will be from 10am - 12noon on
Friday, December 19, 2003. We will
be departing Franklin at 9:30am and return from River Front Park at 12:30pm. All
Students will be riding the school bus both ways.
Since we will arrive back at school after lunch all students will need to
bring a sack
lunch to school that day. We
will eat lunch in the classrooms upon our return. We will need parent volunteers
to chaperone as well as provide snacks, APPLE provides the hot cocoa & apple
cider. Please let your Classroom
coordinators know if you can bring a snack and if you are available to
chaperone. There are seats
available for the chaperones to ride the bus.
IMPORTANT: If you provide a snack with peanuts please label clearly.
AUCTION NEWS
Things are
falling into place for the auction which is March 20, 2004. The auction will be held in a new location at the
“Rendezvous” which is located at 1003 E. Trent Ave.
It is the old Bayou Brewery building. This new location has lighted
parking and is handicap accessible.
We are also working to get projects for the classroom auction items planned and
materials in place before we leave for winter break.
It's a good time to think about what sorts of goods or services you might have
access to as auction donation items. Home baked treats, handcrafted items, and
personal services are all wonderful donations which don't involve having
business contacts.
We can still use your time and talent making this event a success so if you’d
like to sign on please calls Dawnelle Shaw .
Remember
that the auction is an adult function (must be 21 to attend) so please include
child care in your plans."
The
Executive Meetings are held the Tuesday before every Apple Action Meeting.
The meeting is open to ALL Committee Chairs, Standing Positions and the Executive members.
They are from 7-9pm. The
next meeting will be at Lisa Regehr’s house on January 13, 2004.
If you chair a committee or are a standing position member your input is
important so please plan on attending.
Apple Minutes
from
October 21st,
2003
Meeting began
at 7:55
Gladys
Evans began
discussing the Citizen Advisory Committee.
She discussed the Elementary Facility Utilization and School Attendance
Boundary Study.
Purpose:
To determine the feasibility of reducing the current number of school facilities
operated by the district for elementary programs, to include necessary
adjustments in school attendance boundaries, for the purpose of:
1.
Reducing
general fund operating expenses to protect educational programs from further
reductions during periods of declining financial resources
2.
Maximizing
design options for the schools scheduled for replacement or modernization
3.
Maintaining
safe and adequate teaching and learning environments for students and staff
during construction through reuse of schools facilities for temporary housing.
Gladys
requested people bring her their ideas on such subjects as what to do about
decreased enrollment and what to do with students during remodeling. This was
requested by November 10th, when she would be meeting with study
participants.
Christa
Arguinchona announced:
Nancy
Janzen proposed
a vote on approving the budget for 2003-2004. None opposed.
Dawnelle
Shaw had an
auction update. The facility has been changed from the German Inn to the
Rendezvous. The new date is March 20th, 2 weeks before Spring break.
The first meeting on the Auction Committee was fun and interesting. They
were pleased to discover the Rendezvous has a disco ball.
Merrie
Dehmer
discussed food for the auction. Last
year the food cost was $1500. Due to the increase in the room, the new plan is
to have parents make the food this year. There will be a sign up list with food
ideas. They are looking for people who are willing to make items ahead of time
and store in their freezer. Donations
of food, beer and wine are also still needed. It was discussed that you can be
reimbursed for the cost of the food that you prepare.
Approximately 160 people came to the auction last year.
Contact Merrie for more information.
Angie
Hays discussed
procurement for the auction. Remember, it is never too late to get started and
the whole point is to sell great stuff to make money.
The procurement forms are available upstairs along with the business
forms. There is also an example from past programs with ideas listed, available
on the bulletin board. When going
to a business make a note if they state we have missed the fiscal year so we can
do a better job next year of asking during the right time. Debra Skalabrin volunteered to type up a list of businesses we have
received donations from in the past so we can make sure to ask them each year.
Tips:
Anne
Buckley-Jones
suggests collecting items throughout the year to make cool baskets.
Lori
Humphrey suggests
shopping $1 sale items at an
antique store on 1906 E. Sprague.
There
is still room to be on the auction committee.
Nancy
Janzen shared a big thank you from the teachers with regard to
classroom volunteers. The
curriculum is becoming more challenging and they appreciate all the support.
Remember if you sign up to show up. If you can not make your agreement-get
yourself replaced. As a last result call the teacher.
Additional
fund raising as discussed last meeting was taken to a vote. Results will be
available at the next Apple meeting. Goal will be to sell at least $5000 dollars
worth of product if passed.
Last
note: A big thank you to Lisa Regehr and
the celebrations committee for the fabulous barn dance.
