APPLE Program!

Election
nights are when we vote for new executive members.
There are no meetings in November or March. However, the APPLE Auction will be held on March 6, 13 or 20, 2004. All families are needed to work this event.
Childcare is
available in the hallway by the gym during these meetings.
Tables will be set up for QUIET activities.
Good examples are books, coloring, puzzles, board games, homework, etc.
If you are interested in volunteering you will earn DOUBLE
APPLE hours!!! You can contact
James Choate-Deeds for more information.
HOURS! HOURS! HOURS!
A friendly
reminder to all that all APPLE hours are due in on the 8th day of
each month. The rule of thumb is 10
hours per month September - June to get all 90 hours! That’s 2.5 hours each
week. Forms are in the core room
behind Mrs. Calkins classroom.
All the
teachers are looking forward to seeing you this coming Tuesday, September 16.
The classroom meeting with your child’s teacher is from 7pm - 8pm, An
Executive member will meet with each classroom for 15 mins to go over the Action
plan, then we are all off to the large APPLE Action Meeting from 8:15pm -9pm in
the Gym.
DID YOU KNOW?????
Did you know
hat if you volunteer to baby-sit during the APPLE classroom and Action Meeting
you get DOUBLE DOUBLE Apple hours hours!!
That’s DOUBLE… Contact
James Choate-Deeds to sign up today!
Did you know
that helping out with the Franklin vision and hearing screenings you earn APPLE
Hours?
Did you know
that you could earn hours baby-sitting smaller siblings of parents who are
working in the classroom? This is a
great way to trade off baby-sitting so that you can get into the classroom to
help out!
Did you know
that you need 90 hours per family per year to fulfill your parent agreement?
That breaks down to 2 ½ hours a week, 10 hours a month.
Did you know
that attending events WOULD
NOT give you Apple hours? Only
if you work an event will you receive APPLE Hours.
So plan on helping out with future events!
Did you know
that if two parents* attend the APPLE classroom and Action Meetings you BOTH
get to claim 2 hours? *Grandparents,
Aunts, Uncles, etc that have turned in their paper work qualify.

All APPLE FAMILY PICNIC
Last
Sunday, September 7th at Ben Burr Park we had our annual
picnic in the park. The weather
held out and lots of people
attended. The food was great and
the company even better! The
children played Basketball and Soccer while the parent just relaxed for one last
time before the school year has us all off and running! Thank you to everyone who attended and brought a dish.
It was really fun to see our new apple members and revisit with the old!
This year the Franklin APPLE is off and running with our new theme “Lewis and Clark” 200 years anniversary of the famous Lewis and Clark Trail. The Program Planning committee has been hard at work all summer dreaming up wonderful fieldtrips and events to tie in with our theme.
Our first
fieldtrip is to the Turnbull wildlife refuge.
Here is a tentative outlook of our day.
The fieldtrip is on the 15th of September The busses will be at the school at 9 am and will leave Turnbull at 2 pm.
The
classroom co-ord are in process of getting chaperones. We will need 1 adult for
every 6 kids plus we are looking for approximately 4 volunteers 1 more for the
orienteering station and 3 to help with the basket/mat weaving that Beth C is
putting together. Pat Arguinchona and I will be running the orienteering
station. A brief description of the stations:
1 Plant walk- To be run by the
facilitators at Turnbull. Lasts
approximately 45 min. Will incorporate 4 different habitats the 3/4 and
5/6th graders will be allowed to take small amounts of plant material to
take back to the school. The hope is that they will all take different
material that can then be used to study plants for science and also make
some attempt to identify the way L& C did. We will need the digital cameras
as well so we can get more info on habitat and growth for later.
2 Animal prints- This will be a
combination of information about which
animals were noted by L&C in their journals the original qtys 200 yrs ago
and what we have today. They will also have positive animal print for the
kids to identify and take plaster casts of. This will also be run by a
facilitator from Turnbull.
3 Mat making/ Basket weaving- Beth is
working on setting this up. We will
need 3 volunteers to run this so the teachers can have some planning time.
4 Orienteering- This will be a combination of making compasses and getting
the kids to make maps of what they see. We will tailor it to the age groups. i.e...
1/2 will
probably make their own maps without any real specifics. draw what they see.
count steps etc.
The 5/6 kids
will use real compasses give coordinates and draw maps, then exchange maps and
see how fast they can follow someone else’s map. Make a game out of it.
We are
asking everyone to sunscreen if it looks to be hot, and bring a sack
lunch with drink. We will have coolers with ice and water available in case it
is hot. Remember all but one of the activities are outside. We are wanting to
have the kids separated in groups by age wherever possible with the groups set
up ahead of time so we hit the ground running once we get to Turnbull. Please
let me know if you have any other questions.
We are
tentatively planning a trip to the IMAX Lewis and Clark movie on Thursday
October 2nd in the afternoon.
There will
be an all APPLE family Barn Dance and Bonfire this Fall.
Mark your calendars now for October 18 at the Rockford Grange Hall.
It will be a potluck dinner from 4-6, then folk dancing from 6 – 7:30
with Susan Dankovich. Then we’ll all trek across the street to the park for a
bonfire. We are hoping to have the
students make homemade ice cream, the old fashion way and during the bonfire
we’ll pop popcorn again the old fashion way and possibly make smores!
We need
families to bring the salads, main dishes and beverages of their choice.
The celebrations committee will provide water, juice, coffee/cocoa, paper
plates, napkins, cups and silverware. We’ll
need volunteers to help with set up and clean up. More information will be
forthcoming in the weeks ahead.
SPRING EVENT AT CAMP REED!
We have confirmed the dates for the Spring Event as Thursday May 6th and Friday
May 7th . We will be having an overnight at Camp Reed. Mark your calendars now
since it is a mid week event. We are looking for anyone with skills in
orienteering, or any survival skills that they would have needed during a trek
like the voyage of discovery. Anyone with the ability to dry food, make
moccasins, weave, access to old firearms for a demonstration, and make candles
or anything else you can think of. We are also looking for people to work on the
meals for the event. If you have or know of anyone who has any skills in these
areas please have them contact me Merrie Dehmer.
SAFETY ALERT!!!!!!
Parents, not
only is it unsafe, but it is illegal to stop in the middle of the street and
drop your child off in front of the school on 17th ave.
You are to use the parking lot across the street to drop your child off
in. The safely Patrol is there to
see that your child crosses the street safely.
Parents it is your responsibility to model this behavior for your child.
There will be police patrols coming.
If you are caught stopping in the middle of the street to drop your child
off on 17th you could be ticketed.
Please put safety first for all the children at Franklin. Thank you!
The school is incorporating "Love and Logic" into the discipline plan and they will be combining that with "Character Counts". There will be a kick-off "Character Counts" assembly on October 3 at 10:00 am. The assembly is performed by Stars That Shine Inc.
