“HAPPY HOLIDAYS”

What’s New or Happening....

 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OPENING

We’ll be voting for a new executive committee member at the January 17th Apple Action Meeting.  The new member would take over starting in January 2005.  Darin Eckert was asked to rerun, he hasn’t decided yet.  If you’d like to nominate someone please contact any executive member before January 17th.  You must be present at the meeting to vote.

HOURS UPDATE

Sometime during the last week of school in December you will be receiving a letter from your Classroom Coordinators showing the number of hours and meetings you have accumulated through November 30th.   Please review carefully and contact our hours coordinator Jodie Pierson for any discrepancies.

ICE SKATING CELEBRATION

This year the annual all APPLE Ice Skating Celebration will be from 10am - 12noon on Friday, December 16, 2005 .  We will be departing Franklin at 9:30am and return from River Front Park at 12:30pm . All Students will be riding the school bus both ways.  Since we will arrive back at school after lunch all students will need to bring a sack lunch to school that day.  We will eat lunch in the classrooms upon our return. We will need parent volunteers to chaperone as well as provide snacks, APPLE provides the hot cocoa & apple cider.  Please let your Classroom coordinators know if you can bring a snack and if you are available to chaperone.  There are seats available for the chaperones to ride the bus.  IMPORTANT: If you provide a snack with peanuts please label clearly. You may also contact Lisa Regehr.

LEADERSHIP MEETINGS

The Executive Meetings are held the Tuesday before every Apple Action Meeting.  The meeting is open to ALL Committee Chairs, Standing Positions, Executive members and any interested Apple parents.  They are from 7-9pm .    The next meeting will be on January 10, location yet to be announced.

PTG UPDATE

Thank you to everyone who has participated in the Franklin PTG.  The PTG has many fundraisers throughout the year and needs lots of parent volunteers. By joining you can earn Apple hours and help the Franklin community at large.  Please contact Sarah Malm if you’d like to help out.

MISSOULA CHILDRENS THEATRE

The Frog Prince was this year’s play. The students were hard at work all week rehearsing. All the students who auditioned were in the play. There were two performances on Saturday, January 10.  They did a great Job!

 SERVICE PROJECTS

We are still collecting pop can tops for the Ronald McDonald house.   Please send them in with your child if you have a “full house”.

LEAF BOWL WALL ART

The fourth grade Auction project begins on Tuesday, December 13 at 9am .  I will need a couple of parents to help out from 9-12.  Maybe 1 or 2 each hour.  We will finish the project Wednesday afternoon right after lunch.  Same way, 12:30pm – 3pm , 1-2 parents each hour.  Then we will be DONE, FINISHED with our Classroom auction project.  What a GREAT feeling this is going to be!  Contact me, Lisa Regehr  if you can help.  I have two parents already from 9-10am .  Thanks!

  WINE TASTING A GREAT SUCCESS!

A Huge success for Apple!  On November 17, the first of what we hope will be many fund raisers for the Spring Event was held.  The Inaugural APPLE Fall Wine Tasting was a smashing success. About 50 friends and families of Franklin APPLE gathered at the Woman’s' Club of Spokane to sample red, white, sparkling and dessert wines. Most of the attendees brought scrumptious appetizers, and we sipped, nibbled and chatted away the evening. Music was supplied by Kim and Darla, wines were donated from the slightly over-stocked cellar of Anne and Greg Buckley Jones, and tasting was directed by Kurt and Merrier Dimmer. Mark Iverson (who won the award for most family members in attendance) led the planning committee, along with Kurt and Greg.  OK, the sentence you really want to read- we raised over $1100 to help defray costs of the Spring Event, and to hopefully allow siblings to accompany us at the lowest possible cost.   Congratulations to all participants, and thank you to everyone who attended.

Thank you to The Buckley-Jones, Dimmer’s & Iverson’s for their time and effort in making this happen!

All meetings are held on Tuesday Evenings, the dates are:

September 20 2004    October 18, 2004   December 6, 2004 (election night)

January 17, 2006 February 7, 2006 March 7, 2006 April 8, 2006

  May 9, 2006 (election night)

Election nights are when we vote for new executive members.  There is no meeting in November.  However, the APPLE Auction will be held on March 4, 2006 . All families are needed to work one hour at this event.

Childcare is available in the hallway by the gym during these meetings.  Tables will be set up for QUIET activities.  Good examples are books, coloring, puzzles, board games, homework, etc.  If you are interested in volunteering you will earn DOUBLE APPLE hours!!!  Contact Torah Farina for help with childcare.

All meetings are open to all APPLE families. The APPLE Action Meetings are designed to inform the entire APPLE Community of any issues related to the program and committee updates.  Open ended discussions are at the committee level or during the Leadership meetings.

The APPLE website is updated by Jim Wilkey. You can find last year’s newsletters and info on each of the Teachers classrooms.  It is updated monthly.  Go ahead and take a look to familiarize yourselves!

APPLE ACTION MINUTES

DECEMBER 6, 2005

Jody Pierson (via Jim Wilkey) relates that hours are to be due Wednesday Dec. 14th in order to be accounted for in the hours letters to families. Also, discussion regarding reporting forms. The APPLE area has forms, also the web has jpg that can be printed. Hours can be submitted via the website using the link: http://www.spokaneschools.org/franklin/Apple/appleweb.htm

Please when submitting the hours designate the type/description of work done and the name of person doing the hours.

The Executive Committee is accepting nominations/volunteers to fill the impending vacancy of Darin Eckert.

Auction is coming up fast!  Remember to mark your calendars for March 4th.  This is for 21 and over only!  Schedule your babysitters now, many previous Apple and current 6th graders are available.

We need this Auction to be very successful so instead of 3 items procured per family think about 4 or more.  Remember this event benefits your children.

We need someone to volunteer to head up and organize the food for the Spring Event.  Figure out a menu, purchase the food, set up schedule for food prep, etc.  If interested contact Angie.

Angie handed out contacts from previous Apple families to new families.  Remember to get your paperwork in early, by January 6th, 2006   for the DOUBLE hours.  Lisa Regehr is heading up the fourth grade Auction project and they will be finished before schools out for Winter break!

PARKING LOT

Parents we realize the snow has covered the lines, but they haven’t moved.  There are 3 rows of parking.  Please park correctly so that everyone can get in and out for picking up and dropping off children.  Thank You!

SPRING EVENT 2006

This is to remind everyone that Spring Event 2006 will be May 18th thru May 21st. As most of you know, we will be taking a trip to the Olympic
Peninsula and staying at Fort Flagler . We would like you to make arrangements to get time off now. We will need to have a firm head count by the end of February.

A tentative schedule of events follows. We still have plenty of flexibility on Saturday so please let us know of any suggestions.

THURSDAY: Leave early morning
8 am ? (Bring Sack Lunch) arrive Downtown Seattle around 12:30 . Kids eat and go through the Seattle Aquarium, while the bus makes its way across the ferry. After the Aquarium the kids walk on the ferry and meet busses on the other side. Arrive at Fort Flagler Thursday around 4:30 , Check in and Dinner, Explore the Fort.

FRIDAY: Breakfast
Fort Flagler , then bus to Port Townsend approximately 35 minute drive where there would be a full day of docent guided classes by grade level (if interested see Merrie Dehmer for lists). Lunch by group
(sack lunches) Friday night back to
Fort Flagler for dinner and free time.

SATURDAY: Potential cruise for the older kids to
Protection Island (bird migration) and younger kids to Discovery Bay tide pools. Also Potential to hike in cascades, rain forest etc. Sack Lunches during the day. Dinner at Fort Flagler .

SUNDAY: Breakfast, clean up/ pack up/ make sack lunches/ Head back to
Spokane . Depending on the time we could stop in Vantage to see the Ginko Petrified Forest .

There are so many options in that area that we are very open to suggestions for all of Saturday's schedule. We can go anywhere by Bus as mileage is included. APPLE would be paying for all the children and one adult per family,
Tentative costs per additional person would be approximately $55.00 for food and lodging for the 4 day trip. We would encourage you to bring your whole family!! Busses would be for the children because of District travel rules we would still need some families to drive.

  BUDGET

Our treasurer has compiled information available and provided the proposed budget below.  This budget will be voted on at the next APPLE Action meeting.  Please take a look at this and bring any questions to the meeting or contact Dan Pierson.
