What’s New or Happening....
**REMEMBER EVERY THURSDAY THE SCHOOL DAY STARTS AT
9:30AM**
SAFETY ALERT
Parents, not
only is it unsafe, but it is illegal to stop in the middle of the street and
drop your child off in front of the school on 17th ave.
You are to use the parking lot across the street to drop your child off.
Please do not leave your cars unattended.
It causes a back up of cars in the parking lot.
Find a place to park if you need to leave your car. The safety Patrol is
there to see that your child crosses the street safely.
Parents it is your responsibility to model this behavior for your child.
There will be police patrols coming.
If you are caught stopping in the middle of the street to drop your child
off on 17th you could be ticketed.
Please put safety first for all the children at Franklin. Thank you!
HOURS! HOURS! HOURS!
A friendly
reminder to all that all APPLE hours are due in on the 8th day of
each month. If you have been
working this summer (July - August) those need to be turned in. The rule of thumb is 10 hours per month September - June to
get all 90 hours! That’s 2.5 hours each week.
APPLE

If you’d like more copies there will be extras in the core room behind
Mrs. Calkins room. If your information if incorrect you will need to contact me.
Thank you, Lisa Regehr

HARVEST
FESTIVAL / GREENHOUSE RAISING
The
celebrations committee is gearing up for a fun filled year of events starting
off with a Fall Harvest Festival potluck. This
event will be held on October 21st from 6-9pm at the Franklin Gym.
We are having the potluck on Friday then on Saturday, October 22 we will
build a greenhouse! We will be
sending out more details as the dates near.
The property as well as the greenhouse is being donated for our use
during the school year by Mark Neubauer’s parents.
This is a VERY Generous offer
on their part. We will still
have games for the children, Pumpkin carving and painting.
We are hoping to use the Lincoln parks fire pit to make our s’mores!
There will be Chili and cornbread as well as drinks provided.
Please bring a side dish or desert.
There will more information coming as the date creeps closer. Everyone
will need to BYOP (bring your own pumpkin!)
READING
BUDDY’S ICE CREAM SOCIAL
Your child
now has a reading buddy. They will
have them throughout the year. We
celebrated this wondrous event with an ice cream social in the park last Friday.
Thank you to Lori Naylor and Chrys Eastman as well as all the parent
volunteers, it was a great turnout and the children really love making ice cream
in baggies! Here is the recipe for
you to try at home!
Big Baggie:
2 cups ice, 6 tablespoons of rock salt
Little
Baggie: 1 Tablespoon sugar; ½ cup milk; ¼ teaspoon vanilla
Procedure:
Fill the large baggie with the ice and salt, in the smaller baggie put the
sugar, milk and vanilla and seal well. Place
the sealed small baggie inside the larger one.
Seal well again. Shake,
Shake and Shake some more and in about 2-5 minutes – Ice Cream!
FIRST
FIELD TRIP
Apple First
Field trip is to Chewelah Peaks on October 12.
Our students will be offered a variety of outdoor education and
leadership programs. They are
geared for outdoor Science education programs that meet state science standards!
It will be a fun filled day. Students will depart as close to 9 am as
possible. They will not return
until around 4pm. They will need to
wear long pants, tennis shoes and pack a snack lunch.
Apple will provide a healthy snack.
They will be hiking, doing water and forest studies.
Parents will need to pick up their child from school, as there will be no
buses available. If you need help
picking up your child, contact your classroom coordinator.
AFTER
SCHOOL CLUBS
WE
NEED YOU!
Thanks
to the parents who gave their time last year, we were able to provide our
children with after school activities. There were several clubs that were
available and most will be back this year. The following clubs will start this
October: Chess Club, Scrapbook Club, Computer Club, Art through History Club,
Outdoor Sports Club. Sing up forms for the kids will go out as soon as we have
all clubs ready to go.
Remember,
running a club will give you all the APPLE volunteer hours. You only need 1.5
hrs of prep. per week, and 1 hr of club time. You will have fun running a club.
You pick the age group, date and subject. You are in full control. (with some
exceptions, let’s be realistic).
Volunteers are currently needed for the following
clubs:
Reading Club / Foreign Language Club / History Club / Homework Club
Science Club
/ Other
If you have
time to give 1 hour once a week after school, please VOLUNTEER.
Remember, it is up to us THE PARENTS to make sure that our kids have
something constructive to do after school.
If interested contact Vita White
If
you don’t do it, who will?
BOOK
FAIR VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Its that
time of year again! Becky Davis our
Librarian is looking for volunteers to chair the Franklin Library Book Fair.
It will be in late October this year.
The job
involves coordinating publicity; recruiting volunteers to set-up, work the fair
and it takedown, handling the financial details (counting money, completing the
financial forms). Last year, Jessica Gerdes did a fine job while still
maintaining her part-time employment so that gives an idea of the time
commitment. I would estimate this is approximately a fifteen-hour job. And
Scholastic provides lots of "stuff" (forms to copy, publicity posters,
and plenty of other ideas). If you are interested, please reply to me via email
or call me or stop in the library on
a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Apple
parents this counts as hours.....
CLASSROOM
POTLUCK
All
classrooms are encouraged to have a grade level potluck to build community early
in the school year. Parents
interested in volunteering their homes please contact your classroom
coordinators.
RIVER
FRONT PARK ICE PALACE
The annual
All Apple Ice Skating event has been scheduled for December 16, which is the
last day of school. Students will
skate from 10am –12noon. They
will return at 1pm where they will eat a sack lunch in their classroom.
Parents are welcome to chaperone and skate, so mark your calendars now.
We need about 10-15 adults to help with this event. There will be more
about this closer to the date.
OPEN
HOUSE AND BIG TOY DEDICATION
Please help
celebrate your hard work on September 28 starting at 6:30pm. Susan Burns are acting principal for the evening will
dedicate our new Big Toy out back then starting at 7pm will be the Franklin Open
House. It’s a great evening to
come tour the school and visit with teachers and parents. Check out your child’s classroom and see what they’ve
been doing!
ALBERTSONS
COMMUNITY PARNTER CARDS
Did you know
that you could donate money to our school and buy groceries at the same time?
Albertson’s has partnered with local schools to donate a percentage of
your grocery bill back to the school of your choice, which of course would be
Franklin! Contact Jim Wilkey to get
your card today and start supporting your school!
