WORMS
There is a
lot of crawling going on in Mrs. Calkins classroom!
A whole bunch of worms have taken up residence in their classroom.
The students had a guest speaker from the Spokane
last week. She gave the children all kinds of information on worms!
The students will be asking that you donate your scraps (vegetables,) to
their cause. The ½ grade class is spearheading this
worm project.
GREENHOUSE
A great big
thank you to Mark Neubauer’s parents and family!
They not only purchased the greenhouse, but they have already put it up!
This is a great opportunity for our program to learn all about plant
life, but to also make some money to help fund our spring event.
If you have a green thumb please contact Mrs. Jordan.
The 5/6 class will be spearheading the greenhouse projects.
FISH
The fish
have not arrived yet. Yes, we’ll
be having quite a year in Apple! The
¾ grade students will be spearheading this project starting in January.
They will be going on a couple of fieldtrips to a local hatchery before
the fish arrive to better understand them.
There will be no fishing licenses issued!

4TH GRADE
AUCTION PROJECT!
LEAF
BOWL WALL ART
At the
classroom meeting I volunteered to organize the 4th grade Auction project and
several 3rd grade parents may be interested in doing something similar to ours.
We will be making a wall hanging out of leaves. It's really cool looking!
What I need
from each 4th grader is roughly 200 leaves. Don't panic, it's not as hard as you
think! I'd like them to try getting 50 plus of different colors, example 50
yellows, 50 reds, 50 orange, 50 multiple colors. They can be ALL shapes and
sizes.
3rd graders
will need to collect 100 leaves.
Here are some tips for
collecting these leaves:
1 They should be freshly fallen or
"picked" leaves.
2. Leaves need to be soft and pliable, not brown or crispy
3. Avoid leaves with holes and white spots
AND now for the time
consuming part!
Hopefully,
everyone still has last year’s phone books. You and your child will need to
place your leaves between the pages. I find that you should start at the back of
the book and work your way forward. Leaves need to be clean and dry.
Don't overlap leaves, stems can stick out or you can cut them off.
Have about 5 pages between the leaves. When all your leaves are pressed
in the book, tie the book closed and have your child bring it to school. It
takes 2-6 weeks to dry leaves in the phone book. Sometime in December I will put
out the call for help in constructing our project.
The great
thing about this is that the leaves are FREE and we will be finished early!
If you have any questions just give me a call.
I'd like to
have all the phone books in school by next Friday October 28th.
We need to stack them on top of each other to keep the air out and press
them flat.
Thanks! Lisa Regehr
