TIME TO BUY SCHOOL SUPPLIES!
What’s New or Happening....
Summer is almost gone and it’s time to start thinking about school again! School
starts on Tuesday, September 5th, 2006 this year. Our theme this year is
Environment!
**REMEMBER EVERY THURSDAY THE SCHOOL DAY STARTS AT 9:30AM**
ORIENTATION POTLUCK IN THE PARK
It’s time to welcome all our new families with our annual Orientation potluck in
the park. This Thursday Night, August 3rd at 6pm. We’re asking that as many
APPLE families attend as well as all committee chairs. Please bring a potluck
side dish or desert. Apple will provide a deli tray and drinks.
STARTING GETTING APPLE HOURS NOW!
Hooray! It's almost time to start again. If you're anxious to get a jumpstart on
your time contribution to APPLE, Beth could use some help in her classroom.
Please come in any time between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm on Tuesday, August 29. There
will be lots of cutting, pasting, stapling & copying for you to do. Your
assistance is always appreciated. Hope to see you then.
WELCOME TO OUR NEW FAMILIES
AND NEWEST SIBLINGS!
We wish to welcome all our new families into APPLE. This year we have a lot of
new families! Our new 1st grade boys are: Aiden Armstrong, Clayton Bierman,
Cameron Cool, Nicholas Davis, Thorne Gavin, Grant Peterson, Dylan Pierson,
Gabriel Ameny, Jonah Steer, Spencer Swaim, Zayne Starr, Trevor White. 1st grade
girls are: Mya Edwards, Charlotte Chritchlow, Lilly Haghighi, Mackenzie Leaver,
Saylen Leifer, Peris Ochsner, Madeline Olson, Paige Malm, Payten Somes, Alexis
Smith, Josie Walker. We have 4 new 2nd graders Kyle Cool, Dylan Linke, Justen
Olson, and Bailey Frye. Our new 3rd graders are Cassidy Smith, Heather
Heidenreich, and Mattise Wood. Sam Lowder and Taylor Linke are in 4th grade and
Luke Palmer will be in 5th! Wow!
WELCOME MRS. NESSEN!
We are pleased to welcome our new first grade teacher Ellen Nessen. Ellen is an
experienced and outstanding educator. She will bring a great deal of expertise
to the first & second grade team. Prior to teaching first and second grade at
Franklin, Ellen was an early childhood facilitator at Holmes Elementary. She
also works as a staff developer for the Math Learning Center, training teachers
all over the state in the mathematics curriculum used by Spokane Public Schools
and many other districts.
Ellen is a delightful woman who will work well with our teaching team, our
children and the APPLE community. She has a great sense of humor and does an
excellent job of building consensus and facilitating group decision-making.
Ellen and her husband, Brian, will also join the APPLE parent group since their
son, Ian, will be in the third grade in Beth’s class.
It has been ten years since a teacher was hired for the Franklin APPLE program.
Never before has a teacher in our school been interested in transferring into
the program. We were so pleased when Ellen expressed an interest in joining us.
She transferred into the program according to the terms of the SEA/SPS contract
and was notified just last week that the transfer had been approved.
Thank you to the entire APPLE community for your continued support over the
years. You make this a great place to teach! We look forward to many more years
of great teaching and learning together as we add new colleagues to the APPLE
staff. Please join us in celebrating Ellen’s arrival in the program and help her
feel the welcoming warmth of the APPLE community.
Beth, Chris & Tama
A NOTE FROM MRS. NESSEN!
I am so pleased to be joining the APPLE community. Our family has hoped for the
opportunity to be part of APPLE for three years now and we finally get to be not
only an APPLE family but I get to be an APPLE teacher! I am feeling lucky and
blessed. My family looks forward to the community aspect of APPLE – support from
fellow parents who value education and who are in this job of parenting
together. I am looking forward to establishing long term relationships with
students and their families, teaming with parents to bring the best educational
experience possible to our classroom, and getting to work more closely with my
own “community” of Beth, Chris, and Tama.
I have lived in Spokane since attending Gonzaga University where I majored in
Psychology and earned my teaching credential with endorsements in Reading, Math,
and Spanish. I earned my M.A. degree from Gonzaga with an emphasis in Reading. I
have taught for 14 years in private and public schools in Spokane. I have taught
Kindergarten, First, Second, and ½ multi-age classes and enjoyed every minute of
working with small children. I also do some staff development for districts
around the state in the areas of math and literacy. This work with adults keeps
me growing but it is working with children that I love best.
My husband, Bryan, and I have three boys: Ian, who will be in third grade, Evan
who will be in Kindergarten, and Quinn who is 1 ½ years old. We spend our free
time watching Ian’s sports, being “in-character” for Evan’s household drama
productions, and watching for early signs of genius in Quinn.

DID YOU KNOW?????
Did you know that you need 90 hours per family per year to fulfill your
Expectation contract? That breaks down to 2 ½ hours a week, 10 hours a month. If
one or both parents attend the monthly meetings that’s 2-4 hours for that month
already!
Did you know hat if you volunteer to baby-sit during the APPLE classroom and
Action Meeting you get DOUBLE DOUBLE Apple hours!! That’s 4 hours!
Did you know that you could earn hours baby-sitting smaller siblings of parents
who are working in the classroom? This is a great way to trade off baby-sitting
so that you can get into the classroom to help out!
Did you know that Ellen Nesson and Beth Calkins have “to do boxes” for things to
do while at school!
Did you know sometimes the teachers will have work you can take home and do.
There is a posted sign in the core room or just ask!
Did you know helping out Franklin Teachers counts towards APPLE hours? Many 1--3
grade classrooms need volunteers. You can volunteer in any classroom in APPLE to
get hours! A great way to meet older or younger students in the program!
Did you know that Becky Davis our Librarian could ALWAYS use help! A lot of
parent help is needed during the Book Fair!
Did you know that if two parents* attend the APPLE classroom and Action Meetings
you BOTH get to claim 2 hours? (*Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, etc that have
turned in their paper work qualify as well).
Did you know that ANY volunteer work you do at Franklin counts as APPLE hours???
You can help out with the PTG, Spaghetti Feed, School Carnival, ASB Fundraisers,
Art Walk, Math night, vision and hearing screenings, etc.
Did you know that helping out in the Office would earn APPLE Hours?
Did you know that for each procured item for the APPLE Auction would give you 2
hours for each item? That’s a potential of 8 APPLE hours! If you are in charge
of the individual grade Auction project you earn 6 APPLE hours!
Did you know that working on a committee usually involves working at home, after
hours of school? This is a great hour maker for those who can’t get into the
classroom during the day! The Auction & Spring Event Committee’s can ALWAYS use
people! Contact Kimm Hill, Sarah Malm & Ashli Myers for these committees (see
roster for Ph#) today!
Did you know that attending events WILL NOT give you Apple hours? It builds
community, but only if you work an event will you receive APPLE Hours. So plan
on helping out with future events!
Remember, you VOLUNTARILY pursued the APPLE program knowing that you would be
responsible for contributing to your childs education, which also means you are
contributing to all the children of APPLE! Getting Apple Hours is easy so
starting collecting them right away!

PEANUT ALLERGY ALERT
Jamal Al Hafian in Mrs. Jordan’s room has a peanut allergy. The following
information will help you understand the severity of this allergy.
WHAT IS AN ALLERGY?
An allergy is an abnormal response to a "normal" substance. The allergic person
has an altered immune response to substances, which would normally not be
harmful. Symptoms may vary from person to person, both in range and severity.
Not all reactions are immediate.
Anaphylaxis is a sudden, severe allergic response that produces breathing
difficulties, collapse and possible death. Symptoms usually occur within several
minutes following contact with the allergen and proceed rapidly. Anaphylactic
reactions tend to be faster and more severe with each exposure to the allergen.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
*Initial: tingling lips and mouth hives flushing of face, body diarrhea itchy
eyes, nose, face wheezing eyes and face swelling anxiousness vomiting
*Rapidly progress to: weakness and dizziness throat swelling closed inability to
breathe
loss of consciousness
*Treatment: treatment must be prompt. You will not have time to wait for the
parent or the ambulance. The child may be unable to self-administer the
medication due to the severity of the symptoms. The staff at Franklin is trained
in the use of the EPIPEN, which is a pre-packaged automatic injector containing
adrenaline.
