FALL FESTIVAL TONIGHT, OCTOBER 20th!
The Fall Harvest Festival potluck is tonight, Friday, October 27th from 6pm -9pm at the Franklin Gym. The Celebrations Committee will provide a soup bar as well as drinks. Each class has been designated a food item to compliment our soup bar! There will be pumpkin carving, coloring and pumpkin wreaths to make! Everyone will draw a ticket to see what table they sit at and there’s a question on the back to ask someone you don’t know! It’s a fun, quick little ice breaker!
We’ll start the potluck around 6:30-7pm and then finish the evening with Carmel Apples.
Everyone will need to BYOP (bring your own pumpkin!) Carving tools will be provided. Some of you may want to gut your pumpkin ahead of time so you’ll have more time to carve those silly & scary faces! We are going to have roasted pumpkins seeds and some recipes available. We will then use the pumpkins as our table decorations.
Fun for the whole family, siblings welcome to attend. We look forward to seeing you there!
If you were not at the open house or classroom meeting you will need to go to your students classroom and sign up for your child’s conference. Conference will be held on Thursday November 16 – November 22nd. Each teacher has their own sheet of available times for those dates. School will be dismissed at 1pm during those dates. Your child is expected to attend these conferences.
ALBERTSONS COMMUNITY PARTNER CARDS
The Albertson’s Community Partner Cards are still available. Contact Jim Wilkey if you need a card or have any questions.

SPAGHETTI FEED & OPEN HOUSE
Wow! What a turn out! The PTG committee did a fine job of organizing the spaghetti feed. While they did run out of the main dish.. They did clear $200 above their costs! Way to go PTG! Many people came and stayed for the open house!
The Franklin Elementary Fun Run on Friday, September 29th was a great success as well! They raised over $5700 in one day! Parents polled said they really liked the ease of this fun run and look forward to doing it again next year!

APPLE COMMITTEES
AUCTION COMMITTEE
Kimm Hill, Chair
Thanks to everyone who
signed up for jobs on the auction committee. Your
support is most greatly appreciated!
At the last meeting we were reminded of how important traditions are to the
APPLE Community. The auction, in its own way, has be come an APPLE tradition. As
with all traditions, it cannot be continued if there isn't a new generation to
carry it on. The current auction leadership will be leaving the APPLE program in
1-2 years and it is time for us to pass the torch to the next generation of
leaders. The auction is a wonderful event that APPLE parents are proud to invite
their family and friends to. It has become extremely profitable over the last
couple of years, allowing the program to do some fantastic things for the
children, families and teachers. With this in mind, I would like to ask
everyone to give some thoughtful consideration to joining the Leadership team.
Special thanks go to Dan Hieronymus and Cindy Leaver for supporting the auction
by
joining the team as Chairperson Mentee and Procurement/Data Entry. If anyone
has any question or would like to sign up for auction committee please feel free
to contact me. We still need a Food Mentee, please contact Deb Skalabrin.

Denise Wagner, Chair

Stay tuned for the date of our next meeting! We welcome anyone who is interested and didn’t have the chance to sign up at the meeting. Contact Denise!

STANDING POSITIONS
CHILDCARE AA MEETINGS
Bronwynn Shew
Thank-you for all of your responses in regards to childcare! We had such a great response that I was able to make a very light schedule. Each family is only on for one meeting the entire year (unless they requested more). I have set the schedule up to have 3 parents on for childcare during the meetings. There is one additional scheduled person that will be available only in the event of an emergency or illness of the 3 scheduled persons.
I've attached a copy of the schedule, but I've also copied and pasted it below, as not everyone may be able to open the attachment. If you have any questions, please let me know. If you are scheduled for a date that will not work, please let me know as soon as possible, so that we can fix the schedule.
I've also listed (below) the names of all the families that have either responded to the need for scheduling childcare, or have already given of their time for our first meeting. These are the people who will be able to take advantage of the childcare for future meetings. If your name is not on the list, but you would like to be able to utilize the childcare, please contact me as soon as possible, so that I can adjust the schedule.
For those of you who are not taking part in childcare and are tired of seeing my
emails, take heart! I think this is the last email that will be going to the
masses. : )

CLASSROOM NEWS
1st Grade Classroom Update
Literacy Night will be held at the school on Thursday November 2 from 6:30-8:30pm. Come find out great tips for helping our young readers! Parents are needed in the classroom on Monday October 30 and Wednesday November 1, at any time, to help students make their lanterns for the upcoming Lantern Walk. Don’t forget to sign up for your conference time. The conference sign up sheet is on the APPLE bulletin board outside Beth Calkin’s room. Thanks!
2/3 Classroom Update
Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered to sew for the student book bags. More info coming soon as to what we are needed to do. If you would still like to help, please contact Jessica Hieronymus.
Our 2nd Grade Auction project has been decided!!!! The students will be making a bookshelf, hand decorated with "bugs and other creatures". We are then going to have all families donate 1 book on the environment, wildlife or nature. A big thanks to Lynn Caruso for the idea and Carol Waldenberg and Jared Frye (and his father) for helping facilitate this project. If you are able to help in the making of the bookshelf or lend your hand in the decorating of it, please contact Carol or Jared. Parents of 3rd graders, please contact Wendy Smith for information on their auction project.
Next Thursday, Nov. 2, at 6:30 we will have a literacy training night for parents who want to work with children on reading & writing. We'll spend about an hour talking about good ways to talk about reading & writing. This evening will be in conjunction with Mrs. Nessen's class so it will also be a good opportunity to visit with some new APPLE families
Beth's Conference sign up sheet is posted on the bulletin board in the core area. If you have not already signed up, please do so!
This is what I have so far. If Beth sends me more I'll get it over to you as quickly as I can!
5TH & 6TH GRADE UPDATE
Lisa Regehr
Welcome to Mrs. Jordan’s 5/6 class. This is what is happening and what has happened so far in the year. Last week we took a field trip to West Valley Learning Center and watched a presentation by the Woodland Park Zoo from Seattle. It was a digital presentation of the many wildlife sanctuaries in Washington.
MATH We have taken the T.A.I math placement test and are currently using Data About Us and studying graphs like in problem 2.2 we are studying categorical and numerical data. Categorical data is data that is not numbers it is categories. Numerical data is number data.
SCIENCE We are currently doing an experiment trying to grow mold on a piece of white bread. The outlook of the experiment is quite good, because on day 7 of the controlled piece of bread most have substantial amounts of mold. Some of which are white and fuzzy, blue greenish color, white, and red.
ART We alternate weeks with Art. On weeks with Art we do Geography and Social Studies. On weeks without art we do Science. In Art we are writing our names in bubble letters and putting them in different shapes trying to use up all the space.
READING We are reading Tuck Everlasting .We are writing responses to questions and we are making titles for each chapter. We are reading one chapter a day and doing work for it. We discuss the work we did for it the day before.
SOCIAL STUDIES We alternate weeks with Science, but are doing Geography when we have Social Studies. We are also doing Caravans, a game where we are treasure hunters getting treasure for this rich guy and getting paid a lot while we’re at it!
This newsletter was generated by the students in Mrs. Jordan’s class! They are awesome writers!
Thank you to all the parents who attended our Classroom meeting, it is exciting to see everyone still hanging in there after so many years! I look forward to a fun filled year!
