What’s New or Happening....
**REMEMBER EVERY THURSDAY THE SCHOOL DAY STARTS AT 9:30AM**
SAFETY ALERT
Parents, not only is it unsafe, but it is illegal to stop in the middle of the street and drop your child off in front of the school on 17thAve. You are to use the parking lot across the street to drop your child off. Please do not leave your cars unattended. It causes a back up of cars in the parking lot. Find a place to park if you need to leave your car. The safety Patrol is there to see that your child crosses the street safely. Parents it is your responsibility to model this behavior for your child. There will be police patrols coming. If you are caught stopping in the middle of the street to drop your child off on 17th you could be ticketed. Please put safety first for all the children at Franklin. Thank you! Remember Franklin is a NO IDOL ZONE, so turn off the engine while waiting. Also, the handicap parking is for handicap permit parking only.
HOURS! HOURS!
HOURS!
A friendly reminder to all that all APPLE hours are due in on the 8th day of each month. If you have been working this summer (July - August) those need to be turned in. The rule of thumb is 10 hours per month September - June to get all 90 hours! That’s 2.5 hours each week. You can email your “DETAILED” hours to Jodi at: 90hours@comcast.net
APPLE ROSTER
The 2005/06 roster will be going home today. It is on Legal sized YELLOW paper. If you’d like more copies there will be extras in the core room behind Mrs. Calkins room. If your information if incorrect you will need to contact me.
Thank you.
ALLERGY ALERT REMINDER
Jamal Al Hafian in Mrs. Jordan’s has a life threatening allergy to Peanuts. Please see the information on Peanut allergy’s in last month’s newsletter. Thanks!
APPLE AUCTION
The date is set so mark your calendars for the annual fundraising for the APPLE Program. The 2007 APPLE Auction will be held Saturday, March 3, 2007 at the Southside Senior Center which is located on 27th and Ray, next to Thornton Murphy Park. Stay tuned for more Auction details and be sure to visit our table at the Committee Fair which will be held at the October APPLE Action meeting.
HARVEST FESTIVAL
The celebrations committee is gearing up for a fun filled year of events starting off with a Fall Harvest Festival potluck. This event will be held on October 27th from 6-9pm at the Franklin Gym. We are having the potluck on Friday. We will be sending out more details as the dates near. We will still have games for the children, Pumpkin carving and painting. There will more information coming as the date creeps closer. Everyone will need to BYOP (bring your own pumpkin!)
READING BUDDY’S ICE CREAM SOCIAL
Your child now has a reading buddy. They will have them throughout the year. We will celebrate this wondrous event with an ice cream social in the park on September 22. We will need MANY parent volunteers to work this event and just to be there and have fun. The children really love making ice cream in baggies! Here is the recipe for you to try at home!
Big Baggie: 2 cups ice, 6 tablespoons of rock salt
Little Baggie: 1 Tablespoon sugar; ½ cup milk; ¼ teaspoon vanilla
Procedure: Fill the large baggie with the ice and salt, in the smaller baggie put the sugar, milk and vanilla and seal well. Place the sealed small baggie inside the larger one. Seal well again. Shake, Shake and Shake some more and in about 2-5 minutes – Ice Cream!
ALBERTSONS COMMUNITY PARNTER CARDS
Did you know that you can donate money to our school and buy groceries at the same time? Albertson’s has partnered with local schools to donate a percentage of your grocery bill back to the school of your choice, which of course would be Franklin! Contact Jim Wilkey to get your card today and start supporting your school!
BOOK FAIR VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
It’s
that time of year again! Becky Davis our Librarian is looking for volunteers to
chair the Franklin Library Book Fair. This October & November! The job involves
coordinating publicity, recruiting volunteers to set-up, work the fair and it
take-down, handling the financial details (counting money, completing the
financial forms). I would estimate this is approximately a fifteen hour job.
And Scholastic provides lots of "stuff" (forms to copy, publicity posters, and
plenty of other ideas). If you are interested, please contact Gigi O’Neel via
email or stop in the library on a
Wednesday, Thursday or Friday and talk with Becky. Apple parents this counts as
hours.....

PTG WEDNESDAY NIGHTS
Join the PTG. Meet new families, learn about Franklin fundraisers and events and help our school! To be a voting member is just $5 for the year. You can come to meeting without joining and still help out. Remember, you can get apple hours for working fundraisers, attending meetings and helping out with vision and hearing screening. Need more information? Contact our Franklin PTG President Molly Wood .
The Franklin Elementary Fun Run is Friday, September 29th from 1-3pm on the lower field. We’ll have music, prizes, juice bars and a visit from the Spokane Shock Mascot. Thanks to our sponsors every Franklin student will go home with a Fun Run T-shirt.
Please help us to make this our most successful fundraiser of the year by collecting flat pledges with your child from family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors you know well. Do not allow your child to go door-to-door. Help your child fill out the pledge envelope and sign the bottom before returning on or before September 29th.
The money raised will go to special projects and programs for Franklin students and teachers. You are welcome to come and cheer on the students or volunteer for a job. Thank you for helping to make this a fun and fitness-friendly fundraiser!

DID YOU KNOW?????
Did you know that you need 90 hours per family per year to fulfill your Expectation contract? That breaks down to 2 ½ hours a week, 10 hours a month. If one or both parents attend the monthly meetings that’s 2-4 hours for that month already!
Did you know hat if you volunteer to baby-sit during the APPLE classroom and Action Meeting you get DOUBLE DOUBLE Apple hours!! That’s 4 hours!
Did you know that you could earn hours baby-sitting smaller siblings of parents who are working in the classroom? This is a great way to trade off baby-sitting so that you can get into the classroom to help out!
Did you know that Ellen Nessen and Beth Calkins have “to do boxes” for things to do while at school!
Did you know sometimes the teachers will have work you can take home and do? There is a posted sign in the core room or just ask!
Did you know helping out Franklin Teachers counts towards APPLE hours? Many 1--3 grade classrooms need volunteers. You can volunteer in any classroom in APPLE to get hours! A great way to meet older or younger students in the program!
Did you know that Becky Davis our Librarian could ALWAYS use help! A lot of parent help is needed during the Book Fair!
Did you know that if two parents* attend the APPLE classroom and Action Meetings you BOTH get to claim 2 hours? (*Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, etc that have turned in their paper work qualify as well).
Did you know that ANY volunteer work you do at Franklin counts as APPLE hours??? You can help out with the PTG, Spaghetti Feed, School Carnival, ASB Fundraisers, Art Walk, Math night, vision and hearing screenings, etc.
Did you know that helping out in the Office would earn APPLE Hours?
Did you know that for each procured item for the APPLE Auction would give you 2 hours for each item? That’s a potential of 8 APPLE hours! If you are in charge of the individual grade Auction project you earn 6 APPLE hours!
Did you know that working on a committee usually involves working at home, after hours of school? This is a great hour maker for those who can’t get into the classroom during the day! The Auction & Spring Event Committee’s can ALWAYS use people! Contact Kimm Hill, Sarah Malm & Ashli Myers for these committees (see roster for Ph#) today!
Did you know that attending events WILL NOT give you Apple hours? It builds community, but only if you work an event will you receive APPLE Hours. So plan on helping out with future events!
Remember, you VOLUNTARILY pursued the APPLE program knowing that you would be responsible for contributing to your child’s education, which also means you are contributing to all the children of APPLE! Getting Apple Hours is easy so starting collecting them right away!
Mammals visit to the West Valley Outdoor Learning Center. Students will explore hibernation/migration, adaptations and sort animals by characteristics.

September 19, 2006 Apple Action Meeting #1
Minutes recorded by Pamela Adams
Classroom meetings were held prior beginning at 7pm and the Apple Action meeting was called to order at 8pm by Executive Committee Member Jim Wilkey. Chairs were set in a circle and due to high number at meeting a second row of chairs was added. Children in childcare were at working tables at the back of the gym.
**A welcome was given to the new Franklin principal Mrs. Mickey Hanson, Apple Teachers present were Beth Calkins, Mrs. C and introduced as well and Executive Committee introduced by Jim W. and new Apple families stood and gave their names. The attendees were very receptive.
**Jim discussed briefly of Executive Committee growth and also the need to make adjustments in the Bylaws of Apple Program and that these would be brought forth to Apple families soon. In hopes that we can expand this committee we will from now on meet on school property or at a business that can hold a semi-large group of people.
**Childcare at Apple meetings were discussed and it is the belief of the Leadership committee that childcare be provided at these meetings but that the only way that this system can work is for the APPLE parents that use this service to provide assistant with the care. Bronwyn Shew was introduced as the new Child Care Coordinator although she was not present a sheet was sent around for parents to sign up to assist with childcare. It was advised by the Exec. Comm. that childcare be provided in the classrooms and that parents would be in the gym area for classroom meetings and Apple Action meetings beginning at the next Classroom/Apple Action Meetings October 24th.
**Parking problems were brought to the table by Sarah Malm. She discussed a variety of parking issues at Franklin at that we all need to help out. She stated that P/U&D/O can only be done in the south parking lot if you are in an actual stall. No parking on sidewalks and no P/U&D/O in the east parking lot. Mt Vernon & 16th is a designated P/U&D/O zone. Cars are not to be idling in the school area.
**Jim discussed the use of Albertson's Community Cards and by obtaining one will help the Apple program so please let an Exec. Comm. member know if you need one.
**Tania Olson, PTG Vice-Pres. gave Franklin PTG report. Molly Wood Pres. was absent. Franklin Fun Run is Sept 29th, Franklin PTG Meeting & Ice-Cream Social Sept 20th. October 19th Franklin Open House & Spaghetti Feed. If you would like to volunteer please contact Tania.

1st GRADE
1st grade is off to a fabulous start! At the first APPLE meeting Mrs. Nessen shared homework policies (read, read and read!), discipline procedures, curriculum topics, and volunteering opportunities. Parents have signed up for classroom jobs (you know who you are!) and a list is available for those interested in a babysitting swap. A lot of information has been covered in a short amount of time, but do not despair, there will be many opportunities to have you questions answered! A big thank you to Mrs. Nessen for sharing her talents with our kids!
Thank you to all the parents who attended the first Classroom Meeting. We had a good turnout! Our goal this year is to mentor our new families with the knowledge and experience you now have after 5+ years in the program!
Homework:
Mrs. Jordan
assigns homework M-Thurs. It should take them about 1 hour or less to
accomplish. In addition, they should read every night for 30 minutes to
increase reading fluency. They have a homework log and weekly graph for parents
to view that lets you know if they are getting their homework in on time or
not. Also, we are also working hard on our multiplication and division facts.
A letter for this practice is signed daily by parents. Every Thursday night
parents will sign the homework log for the week. Students are responsible for
turning this in on Friday. Some parents were concerned about after school
activities interfering with their child's ability to get their homework
completed and turned in the next day. Mrs. Jordan accepts late assignments and
students have the option of completing it the next night and turning it in.
However there are some consequences that will affect their homework graph and
the extra recess on Friday afternoons. They do have the option of making up
missed assignments. Ask your student how.
Finally, if there is still
missing work by Friday, a Homework Alert letter will go home for the weekend.
Your child will list the missing work and will need to complete it by Monday.
The intent here is that parents know what is going on each week and how well
your child is developing the study habits so crucial for success in school and
beyond.
Refocusing is the behavior plan adopted district wide. Your child is aware of this plan and how it works. A sheet went home the first week of school that parents signed and return to class.
There is still a Sixth Grade Events and Field Trip coordinator position open. If you are interested please contact Lisa Regehr for more details.
