IT'S SHOW TIME

You've procured your three items. You've paid for your tickets. You've signed up for a job.

Now, it's time to party at the annual APPLE Auction. So don't forget that checkbook. (Credit cards accepted, too.)

Here are a few things every APPLE family needs to remember:

LET'S CELEBRATE

More than 20 APPLE women came to ladies' night out at Twigg's. A couples' night is planned for April, with tentative plans to go bowling. Other ideas are welcome, so send them to davidandgina3524@msn.com

ENROLLMENT

Please tell friends and family about the APPLE orientation meeting at Franklin on Feb. 28. It starts at 7 p.m. To be eligible for the APPLE enrollment lottery, interested families must complete a three-step process:

  1. Attend one of two APPLE Orientation meetings, complete paperwork, and sign up for an observation/tour of Franklin APPLE.
  2. Attend the scheduled observation/tour.
  3. Attend the Meet and Greet at a date to be determined.

Thank you for helping to get the word out,
Jodie Pierson and Ashli Myers, Enrollment Committee

Fourth-Grade News

The 4th graders are busy with their next book report. And it's everyone's favorite: the biography book report. Each child is reading a biography about someone who has made a contribution to the world. Students will make a time frame that includes pictures about the person's life and descriptive sentences. They will also write a two-to-four minute speech telling about this person in the first person and dress how the person would have dressed. The report is due is March 13. A date will be announced later for when families and friends can come to the "Living Museum" to hear everyone's speeches.

Fourth graders just finished their expository writing assessments and are still busy working on strategies for double-digit multiplication and long division. There is a lot of great learning going on in the 4th grade classroom. Stop by sometime and take a look.

Look forward to seeing you all at the auction March 1.

From Christa Arguinchona, fourth-grade classroom coordinator

Minutes from Feb. 19, APPLE Action Meeting

Lisa Regehr called the meeting to order at 7:52 p.m.

Merrie Dehmer of program planning encouraged APPLE families to ask their children about the international program. Students have done a variety of things, including making sausage, dancing and crafting drums. During Japan week, all APPLE students will visit Mukogowa Fort Wright Institute.

Lori Naylor, executive member and enrollment committee, reminded families that the APPLE open house is Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium. The program desperately needs fifth and sixth graders to complete the expansion.

Jessica Hieronymus of the auction committee thanked parents for working so hard on the auction. The deadline to turn in money for tickets was extended to Feb. 22. All procured items are due Feb. 22, too.

Large items and classroom projects can be delivered to Centerplace the day of the auction, but Jessica said she needs descriptions of those items immediately. Jessica also said she has a few job openings. Contact her at 747-3967.

Tania Olson of the auction food committee said she was looking for people who could pick up last-minute items at grocery stores the day of the auction. Also, she needs to hear from people who plan to make food but aren't sure about quantity.

Lisa Regehr reminded families that the auction is for people 21 and older. If you need a babysitter, contact Lisa at 534-2945 or Lori Naylor at 443-0623. They know APPLE graduates who could babysit.

APPLE parent Mandy Edwards of AmeriCorps talked about scholarships from $1,000 to $1,225 available to adult college students who perform between 300 and 450 hours of volunteer work each year. While the program is available to any student over the age of 17, AmeriCorps is targeting high school seniors, she said. If you are interested, contact her at 534-5348 or visit the Web site, http://www.americorps.org/

Sally McKen asked if Franklin APPLE had considered starting a kindergarten. Lori Naylor said that Beth Calkins taught one at Garfield years ago, and the idea has recently been discussed but put on hold until the existing program's expansion is complete. Lori added that Principal Mickey Hanson supports the idea.

Lisa Regehr adjourned the meeting at 8:13 p.m.
