Havermale Career Center September Bulletin

Welcome to the 2008-2009 school year.  My hours at Havermale are Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. or by appointment.  The easiest way to contact me is by email at deborahcr@spokaneschools.org or by phone at 354-6451. I look forward to working with you this year.

The new site key for the WOIS career software ( www.wois.org ) is now available.  Contact me for the site key (sorry, I can’t post it online).   If you haven't checked this site out before do it today!  There is tons of useful info on careers and colleges in the state.  Spokane Public Schools uses the WOIS system to complete the High School and Beyond Plan a new graduation requirement.  I will help you complete your plan.

The next 2 upcoming SAT testing dates are October 4th (with a Sept. 9 registration deadline) and November 1st (with a Sept. 26 registration deadline).  The fee is $45.  If you qualify for a fee waiver let me know, it goes by family income.  For more info and to register go to www.collegeboard.com

The next 2 upcoming ACT testing dates are October 25th (with a Sept. 13 registration deadline) and December 13th (with a Nov. 7th registration deadline).  The fee is $46 with writing and $31 without.  If you qualify for a fee waiver let me know.  For more info and to register go to www.act.org

We will be offering the PSAT for all interested students Wednesday, October 15th.  Juniors please note that this is how you qualify for National Merit Scholarships.  Contact Cindy McMahon for more information.

It’s National College Fair time!  The fair is Wednesday, October 1st at the Spokane Convention Center from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.  Over 100 colleges and universities will be in attendance.  This is your chance to find out more about the schools you are interested in including; admission requirements, programs offered, financial aid, housing, student life, etc.  I will be presenting a workshop again this year, College Information on the Web.  Stop by and say hi and get a piece of candy.  For a list of schools attending you can visit www.nationalcollegefairs.org

Exploring College Options Student/ Parent Information Session will be on Sunday, September 14th at 7:30 p.m. at the Mirabeau Park Hotel.  This is your chance to meet with Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, Penn and Stanford.  If you plan to attend please rsvp at www.exploringcollegeoptions.org

The 3rd annual Construction Career Day will be October 1st and 2nd at the Spokane Fairgrounds.  Havermale will be attending both days.  This is a great opportunity to check out careers in the construction field.  Over 30 pieces of equipment will be onsite for you to operate and a variety of hands-on activities.  If you are interested in attending please contact me.  I will be going around to classrooms with a sign-up sheet.

I encourage all seniors to register for a FAFSA pin number so that you will be ready to apply for financial aid in December.  To register visit www.pin.ed.gov   For financial aid info visit www.fafsa.ed.gov or www.studentaid.ed.gov
