By the end of 3rd grade, your child

Movement Skills, Fitness & Health, Nutrition
- Develop
mature motor patterns for the basic locomotor, non locomotor,
manipulative skills, and combined movement skills (i.e.,
throwing, kicking, catching, running into a jump, rhythms).
- Acquire
beginning skills of a few specialized movement forms (i.e.,
proper hand position for forearm pass, correct overhand
throw technique).
- Engage
in moderate to vigorous structured physical activity.
- Introduce
nutrition concepts (i.e., food pyramid).
Think
Analytically, Logically, Creatively
- Identify
the components of health-related physical fitness (i.e.,
cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance,
flexibility and body composition).
- Apply rules,
procedures, and safe practices with some instructor reinforcement.
- Recognize
the benefits of practice to increase skill competence.
Understand,
Demonstrate, Communicate
- Recognize
personal successes and achievements from involvement in
physical activity.
- Participate
in activities that require some physical exertion and/or
skill development, outside the regularly scheduled Fitness
& Health class (i.e., minimum 40 minutes each week with
classroom teacher).
Acquire
and Use Concepts of Equity and Diversity
- Experience
differences and similarities among people of different backgrounds
by participating in activities of national, cultural and
ethnic origins.
Incorporate
Innovative Technologies
- Integrate
a variety of techniques (when available) as it applies to
physical management, improving content learning, and the
learning of specific skills (i.e., video camera/recorder,
insert data for self improvement analysis).
Apply
Fitness & Health Concepts
- Identify
at least one activity associated with each component of
health-related physical activity.
- Identify
and compare employment possibilities in the field of Fitness
& Health and related areas.
