The Libby Workshop Program is a two-hour pull-out program for district-wide special education secondary students who need vocational work skills. Students “earn while they learn” as they complete projects in the workshop. Projects include: producing wooden shipping boxes and crates; building bird houses and bird feeders; producing projects for the holidays; planters for the spring; and custom work for Spokane Schools. Workshop projects are completed for public and private schools, community agencies, businesses, and local clients. The Workshop program is similar to a job. The students are paid for the work they complete as well as proper work ethics.

Workshop Goals:
The student who participates successfully in the Libby Center Workshop program:

  • is graded for his/her attendance
  • acquires generic work skills
    • working independently
    • working in small groups
  • produces work for sale to the community
  • develops work ethics
    • quality of the product
    • quantity of the product
  • works in a professional, controlled learning environment
  • becomes self-directed and self motivated

Steps to Admission:

  • The student is brought to the attention of the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) at his/her home school. An Education Specialist or Student Case Manager meets with the student, teacher, and other appropriate school
personnel to discuss the program and placement options.
  • Following assessment of the student’s needs and a determination that the student could benefit from participation in the Workshop program, the home school refers the student to the Principal of Libby Center.
  • The Education Specialist or Student Case Manager, the Libby Center Principal,
and the teacher of the Workshop discuss the options for the student. At this time
    the placement decision is made.

Educational Goals:

Benefits include:

  • working with students who have struggled with academics
  • discovering their capabilities and talents working with their hands
  • completing the Workshop program and continuing to a Strive placement or placement in Images at Spokane Community College
