We are excited about the 2011-12 school year and the many opportunities it brings for our students to learn and grow.

As we begin each new year, we start with our eyes on the goal: for each student to meet high standards and graduate ready to start college or a career. Every step of the way, we are using best practices to provide our students rich and rewarding educational experiences that will give them the academic tools necessary to succeed in today’s world.

We are proud of the wide range of programs we offer to meet the needs of our 28,400 wonderfully diverse students. Recognizing that each student has individual needs and individual ways of learning, we provide choices for families so that they can find an environment that is challenging, engaging and welcoming for their student.

We continue our focus on improving the graduation rate, a problem shared by schools across the nation, and have dedicated resources to ensuring our students are getting the support they need. We have expanded our ICAN program, for example, to allow middle and high schools students who have failed a class to take an abbreviated online course in a classroom with a teacher present.

Other efforts at the middle school level focus on improving the transition experience for students moving from elementary to middle school and middle to high school.

Fortunately, we are part of a community that is incredibly supportive. Through celebrations and challenges alike, Spokane’s commitment to schoolchildren never wavers. We look forward to partnering with you as we all strive to prepare our students for their future.

Sincerely,
