Dates/Schedule
- Summer Academy is scheduled to run June 22 - July 14.
- Classes will meet from 7:30 AM - 2:00 PM.
- No classes in session on July 3rd and 4th for the Independence Day holiday.
- There is only one session of Summer Academy 2023.
Intro to Baking: Food Worker Card
Washington State requires that all food workers have food safety training before handling food served to the public. Food workers who take a food safety training class and pass the State of Washington exam on food safety basics are issued a Food Worker Card (also called a Food Handler Permit).
Students enrolled in our summer Intro to Baking class need to obtain their Food Worker Card by the first day of class on June 22nd. There are three steps that must be completed to obtain a Food Worker Card:
- Learn
- Take test
- Pay for Card ($10)
The Food Worker Card module (learn) and assessment (test) is completed online at https://www.foodworkercard.wa.gov/. The $10 fee is also paid at https://www.foodworkercard.wa.gov/. Your Food Worker Card is valid for two years – if you get a part-time job at a restaurant or fast-food chain within that time, your Food Worker Card will be valid for that employment.
When you successfully complete the Food Worker Card module and pay the $10 fee, you will receive an email with a link to your card. Please forward that email or a picture of your card to your Intro to Baking instructor, Eric Cook, via email before June 22nd. His email address is: EricC@spokaneschools.org
Or you can bring in a copy of your card to Eric on June 22nd.
Registration
NEWTech Summer Academy 2023 Application
The first placement of students will take place on May 5th. Notification of placement will be sent out via email.
Summer Academy 2023 placement is prioritized as follows:
1. Current NEWTech Prep students working on Industry Recognized Certification
2. Students placed in a NEWTech program for 2023-24
3. All other students—based on a placement lottery.
After the initial May 5th placement, any remaining seats will be made available to students who submit applications after May 5th. Those applications will be processed in the order received until May 31st.
Students may only take one Summer Academy class.
Summer Academy Classes with Open Seats
The first Summer Academy 2023 placements are completed. All our Summer Academy 2023 classes are full. If we receive notice from a student, who received placement in Summer Academy 2023, that their plans have changed and they no longer will be attending Summer Academy 2023, we will offer the placement to a student, who didn’t receive placement, in the order applications were submitted. If you would like to be considered for potential open seats, please submit a Summer Academy 2023 application.
