What is SHAPeS?
The
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has recognized Spokane
Public Schools as a high-achieving school district by
granting the district $16.4 million. The funds will
be allocated to individual schools over a five-year
period through a project called SHAPeS, which stands
for Spokane High Achieving
and Performing Schools.
The overall goal of the SHAPeS project is higher achievement
for each and every student.
Schools
have already received planning allocations to
research how to best serve their particular students.
Study teams at each school are studying each of
seven attributes of a high-achieving school. These interrelated
attributes are
- Common
focus
- High
expectations
- Personalized
learning
- Respect
& responsibility
|
- Time
to collaborate
- Performance
based
- Technology
as a tool
|
Research
includes readings and visitations to high-achieving
schools across the nation, as well as examining data
on student performance and student climate.
After
a year or more of research, followed by verification
that schools are ready to proceed, they will apply for
implementation allocations. Some schools are
expected to apply for implementation grants this school
year with changes occurring next year. Parents and community
members are encouraged to contact schools in order to
become involved in this important work.
