REPORTING OF CHILD ABUSE/NEGLECT

Washington State Law (RCW.26.44.030) identifies “professional school personnel (including, but not limited to, teachers, counselors, administrators, facility personnel, and nurses)" as mandated reporters who are required to report a concern regarding any suspected child abuse or neglect.

Procedure:
School personnel should make an oral report to the Department of Social and Health Services (CPS) by calling 363-3333 within 48 hours after learning of the incident (RCW26.44.030). If unable to contact CPS, or if this is a third party offense, call law enforcement at 532-9266.

Once a report is made, school personnel must complete the Reporting of Child Abuse in Spokane Public Schools form which can be found on the Intranet. A copy of the report should be kept at school and a copy should be sent to Student Support Services at the Administration Building.
