Classy Rack - Union Gospel Thrift provides opportunities for Spokane students to help others.

Envision is a restorative program which assigns Spokane School District students to community service hours to reduce suspensions and to engage students in their community.   Procedures are as follows:

·         Building administrator meets with student who is subject to suspension to assess the appropriateness of placement in Envision Program.  Students must accept responsibility for their actions and agree to do community service.  Please do not refer students who are extremely angry or in denial.  Those students are not good candidates for working with outside agencies and will not be open to the restorative process.

·         Building administrator discusses placement with parent/guardian.  He/she tells the parent to call Mary Syme in Student Support Services at 354-7393 to schedule an appointment with Suzanne Smith, Envision Program Supervisor.  The student must attend the meeting with the parent/guardian.

·         Building administrator e-mails Suzanne with the following:  student name, name of parent/guardian who was contacted and the phone number, the due date for the service to be completed, the original number of days of the suspension, and the hours of community service requested.  The current agreement is that 4 hours of community service reduces the suspension by one day.

·         Building administrator enters number of days suspended into SASI, for example, Disposition Code 55 and Description Short Term Suspension.  Please do not enter Disposition 60 for community service.  Mary will make that change after CS has been completed.

·         Suzanne meets with parent/guardian and student to discuss program expectations and to complete intake (agreements/liability) forms.  Work sites are discussed and one is chosen with consent from parent/guardian.  Building administrator is e-mailed confirmation that CS has been assigned.

·         Suzanne faxes a copy of Medical Release Form to the work site with the name of the student and the dates and times of community service.

·         Parent/guardian arranges for transportation of student to and from work site.

·         Student performs service hours.

·         We call the worksite to verify completed hours, and the student delivers a signed Hours Verification Form to the administrator with the number of successfully completed hours. The building administrator will receive an e-mail from Suzanne confirming that service has been completed.  Verification may take several days.

·         Mary Syme in Student Support Services enters a 60 (for community service) under DisUC1 and the number of days of suspension reduced under DisUC2.  When she does this, the Disp Cd and Disp Description will be shaded gray.  This will indicate that a suspension has been reduced.  We will use this data for reporting purposes.  A copy of the changed SASI form is then sent to the administrator as an FYI.

·         If a student is uncooperative at the site, the work site will contact Suzanne or the parent/guardian.  The parent/guardian will be required to remove student from work site.

·         Students who fail to complete community service satisfactorily will be referred to building administrator for follow-up and reinstatement of original consequences.
