Practicum in Community Involvement (PICI)
|
One VISTA member supports the activities of Practicum in
Community Involvement (PICI). PICI, a course created and taught
by teacher, John Hagney, has offered Lewis and Clark seniors the
opportunity to make a positive difference in our community since
1994.
PICI is an award-winning community based course through which
students develop an expertise on an issue (e.g., psychology of
dying). Students are guided by a mentor with academic and
career credentials compatible with this issue, consult with
Eastern Washington University faculty on their research, intern 3
hours per week throughout the academic year at a community
non-profit organization addressing this issue (e.g., Hospice of
Spokane), and work with clients served by the organization.
There are 30+ affiliated organizations from which students can
choose internships. Other internship options include
documentary filmmaking and public interest radio programming
through KPBX Spokane Public Radio.

Service-Learning Projects in Schools
|
VISTA members are available to assist classroom
teachers and school counselors with various service-learning
projects.

Inspired by presentations from a VISTA
member (on the left) and school counselor, Odyssey students
learned about natural disasters and raised money for relief of
victims of the Southeast Asian tsunami. The Ready*Corps
VISTA member and Odyssey counselor presented a check for $1,100
to the local chapter of the American Red Cross.
