Ready*Corps VISTA Mission

Vision

Ready*Corps VISTA is a program to work with the community in developing disaster preparedness skills.

Mission

Spokane Public School District has Ready*Corps members placed at local social service agencies and working 15% of their time teaching SERT to all Spokane Public School District Middle Schools. These AmeriCorps*VISTA members are not employees of the district but are national service members who have dedicated a year of their lives to serving their community. AmeriCorps*VISTA is often referred to as a domestic Peace Corps.

Ready*Corps members support a safe school environment and seek to increase safety self-regulation among students, thereby, allowing teachers and staff to focus more time and energy on academic achievement.

Ready*Corps VISTA goals include the following:

Support school district risk management activities
Serve a diverse student population, including non-English speakers and students with disabilities
Mentor students to strengthen educational engagement
Provide after school activities for students, including Civic Engagement projects, Student Emergency Response Training (SERT) Clubs, and community service
Complete Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training
Participate in disaster preparedness efforts
Enhance Spokane's professional emergency management, public health, and public safety capabilities where appropriate, especially in times of emergency
