STRIVE - PLACEMENT MODELS

After students have been identified for STRIVE placement, their career goals, interests, and abilities are considered for a job match. State standards and business expectations are also evaluated. The student's ability level determines how much supervision is needed from school staff. The supervision needs are set at three levels or placement models. The placement models are enclave, supervised-on-the-job training(SOJT), and on-the-job training(OJT).

Enclave model
The enclave model consists of up to four students supervised by school staff. These students are continuously overseen by school staff at the business. STRIVE Specialists train the students to do the assigned tasks. For instance, Deaconess Medical Center has an enclave in Central Services. Students sticker all medical and patient supplies, e.g.needles, bandages, tubing, shampoo, toothpaste, etc., while being continuously monitored by school staff.

Supervised-on-the-job training model or SOJT
The supervised-on-the-job training model or SOJT, consists of up to 10 students in a business with school staff on the premises. Students are placed in various departments of a large business. STRIVE Specialists train the students to do the assigned tasks. The school staff on site does frequent visits to each department where a student is placed. School staff stays on site until the students leave and is available for support whenever needed. Avista has had STRIVE students in the maintainence department, garage, cafeteria, mailroom and other departments.

Another type of SOJT is at The Northtown Shopping Center. Students are placed in various stores and in different departments within these stores. Emporium, Mervyns, Regis Hairstylists, J.C. Penneys, Bon Marche and Sears have students working in various departments. School staff visits each of the stores and their departments to monitor student progress as they perform their duties.

On-the-job model training or OJT
The on-the-job model training or OJT, consists of a student individually placed. . The STRIVE Specialist trains the student on site, if needed, until the student is. independent. Follow-up and support for the student and business occurs at least once a week or more, if needed.
