NEWS & UPDATES

July 2008 News and Updates

The first couple of weeks after school lets out are always a little fraught. We never feel quite comfortable as we begin the days that have a slower pace here in the sub office because we’re still expecting the usual busyness to be right around the corner. Fear not! It only took us a couple of days to get our summer on, and while we’re not exactly sipping frosty beverages poolside as we wrap up 2007-2008, we’ve certainly adopted a more relaxed approach to our work … and we’re sleeping in … sometimes as late as 6:30 in the morning! Okay, that may not seem late to you, but it feels positively luxurious to us.

Every year we have some substitutes who forget to update their Security badges and this keeps them out of the classroom! You must update your Security badge BEFORE August 18 in order to teach in September.

  • If you have received a Letter of Assurance you need to drop by Security Monday through Thursday between June 15 and August 15, 2008 to obtain a new ID badge for the 2007-2008 school year. You’ll need to bring your 2007-2008 ID badge in order to exchange it for your shiny new badge. A $2.50 replacement fee will be charged if your photo ID is lost, stolen, damaged, or if you have a name change.

We do want to be up-to-date on your information so please keep the following in mind!

  • If you move, please notify us so that we can make sure your mail gets delivered to the right address.
  • If you get hired, please notify us so that we don’t inundate you with calls for work.
  • Check your certificate for an expiration date! We cannot allow you in the classroom without a current valid Washington State Teaching Certificate.

Direct Deposit
Are you going to be on vacation on payday? Don’t worry! Sign up for direct deposit now! Forms can be found on the district web site (www.spokaneschools.org, payroll department, payroll forms).

Please remember that to be considered for long-term substitute positions or regular employment, you must keep your applicant file up-to-date. In addition, we have a large number of positions that are filled the last week of August with long-term substitutes and last-minute hires. Any applicant file questions should be directed to the applicant specialists Terri LeFors or Cindy Blair (terril@spokaneshools.org  or cindyb@spokaneschools.org

Please be aware that while the last week of August is a great vacation time for MOST people, it is a busy hiring time for education folks! You may wish to plan your vacation accordingly.

If you are going to be out of town during the last two weeks of August please mark your SubFinder calendar!  SubFinder will be calling to set up subs for the 2008-2009 school year, don’t miss out on September jobs! Speaking of calendars, the 2008-2009 school calendar is available for downloading right here: http://www.spokaneschools.org/Welcome/Calendar2008-09.pdf

We’ve been talking to our pals who schedule classes and are looking forward to announcing some SNAP and SASI classes available in August for classified substitutes who are interested in beefing up their skills. SNAP and SASI are the Nutrition Services and Attendance programs used in Spokane Public Schools and subs who have taken these classes are highly sought after. As soon as we have the information, we’ll post it here.

The first day of school is September 2 (that’s a Tuesday). We know it seems a long way off, but the summer does have a way of flying by … probably because there are so many great ways to have fun. We’re doing a little bit of traveling, a little bit more of that sleeping in and then we thought we’d spend the rest of the summer exploring the region’s lakes … which one is your favorite? Both Cathie and Kate will be regularly checking their e-mail, so please contact us if you need questions answered. katem@spokaneschools.org and cathiem@spokaneschools.org.
