May 2008 News and Updates

We always have the same feeling of “holy cow, how did we get her so quickly” in May. This year is especially accelerated because of the, let’s face it, abysmal weather we’ve had since – oh gosh, November. The trees are finally leafing out, daffodils are opening in defiance of still bitter nighttime temperatures and long delayed cases of spring fever are breaking out all over town. We’ve gone from wintry weather to only a few days of school left and it seems like it happened over night.

May is the month we gear up towards all year long. It is our busiest time in the sub office and you can expect some changes right away in the way we contact you. We’ve already moved our morning call out time to start at (yikes!) 5:30 AM. Many of you have had us hand call you and assign you jobs in person rather than waiting to have SubFinder call you. Calendar maintenance is always important. In May it is imperative! When you are unavailable to work please call SubFinder to appropriately block your calendar. If you pick up a half day job that is morning only, it is safe to assume that we will be contacting you for an afternoon assignment. If won’t be available in the afternoon, mark your SubFinder calendar!

With so many sub jobs you will certainly be hearing more “Emergency All-Call” assignments. We want to thank those of you who have been so willing to accept these assignments, often working outside your endorsement area and generally pitching in to help when we really need you. Mega-kudos guys! You’re heroes!

While we’re feeling grateful let us pass on our thanks to the many subs who took the time to fill out our ‘Star’ memo. We especially appreciated hearing about specific schools and staff members who made your day … and we passed your kind words on so you’ve made somebody else feel like a star! There now, don’t you have a warm glow all over?

A lot has changed at the new and improved John R. Rogers High School.  During Winter Break, they moved in to the new building and have made a few changes in their Substitute Procedures.  All subs need to go to the Public Office (at the end of the main hall, past the Guidance and Attendance Offices) and check in.  At that time, they will sign in, pick-up their sub folder and have any questions they might have answered (such as, “Where in the heck do I go from here??”).  The next stop is “around the corner” to the Business Office where they are issued their room keys.  At the end of the day, they return the keys and bring back the sub folder (we have a special basket to put it in) and are free to leave.  Check in time is at 7:30 for all classes except for the zero hour classes.  Zero hour substitutes can check in at 6:50 AM.

Over the summer we’ll be working on a couple of projects to expand SubFinder’s ability to call subs. Look for further information coming in the July News and Updates.
