NEWS & UPDATES

August 2006 News and Updates

Here we are, August already with September and the 2006-07 school year staring us in the face! With so much going on during your fun-filled summer, please take time right now to make certain that you are ready to start in September with your new security badge, your SubFinder information up-to-date and your appointment calendar waiting to be filled with lots of assignments.

Remember that the security offices are on the first floor during the building remodel and badges can be prepared. Security is available to make new badges on Wednesday, Thursday or Fridays before August 18, 2006. You’ll need to bring your 2005-2006 ID badge in order to exchange it for your shiny new badge. A $2.50 replacement fee will be charged if your photo ID is lost, stolen, damaged, or if you have a name change

Between now and mid-September Human Resources fills numerous positions. It is wise to keep your contact information current. If you plan to be out of town, please leave a number where you can be reached. Every year we have a couple of terrific candidates who miss getting hired simply because Human Resources has no way to contact them. Don’t let this happen to you!

If you wish to be considered for regular contract positions for the 2006-07 school year, please note, you must maintain a current Certificated Application File. Applicant questions should be directed to Cindy Blair cindyb@spokaneschools.org or Norma Cantu normac@spokaneschools.org (Cindy handles people with last names beginning with A-K and Norma handles people with last names beginning with L-Z).

School calendars are available for downloading on-line http://www.spokaneschools.org/Welcome/Calendar2006-07.pdf, please note that the first day of school will be Tuesday September 5. While you’re on-line, take a look at the District News http://www.spokaneschools.org/DistrictNews/ which is a great resource for an overview of what is happening district wide.

Please, oh please … if you have a change in your employment status, do let your old pals at the sub desk know. We know how terrific you guys are, and it doesn’t surprise us at all to learn that you’ve been hired. However, unless you tell us, we can’t reprogram SubFinder NOT to call you, and you can be assured of regular phone calls that you no longer want. If you get hired with our district on a one-year-only contract, the simplest way to avoid unwanted SubFinder calls is to enter a year-long Do Not Disturb date range. This will block phone calls for 2006-07, but leave you open for the following year.

Next month look here for a schedule of Substitute Orientations. Due to the remodeling project down town, our orientations will be held in various sites around the district. In September please look for an updated Substitute Handbook available on-line as soon as we get it back from our trusty editor (she’s been out of town working on furthering her education). We’ll let you know as soon as we’ve got it ready to download. New to Substitute News and Updates in 2006-07 will be a Q & A feature. We welcome your questions about substitute work. Please e-mail Kate at katem@spokaneschools.org and she’ll move heaven, earth and large educational administrators to get you the answers you want.

Cathie and Kate will be back in the office beginning in around the 21st of August (depending on when Cathie’s grandbaby makes his grand entrance). We’ll be fully staffed by August 25 and ready for a splendid school year. Until then, we’ll both be cherishing these glorious last weeks of summer, Cathie will be snuggling her grandson and Kate is going out of town for her yearly recommended dosage of Oregon Coast. As always, we’re looking forward to working with you and are at your service if you need anything from us.
