September 2007 News and Updates

Ready? Set? We’re only asking because the time is here and we want to ready to GO! The first day of school is September 4 and while we know that you know that the first couple of weeks are not usually busy for substitute jobs we also know that those first couple of weeks are going to zip by in a hurry. By the end of the month we should be keeping you all relatively enthusiastically dashing from one job to the next.

Punctuality is one of those dividing issues, like squeezing the toothpaste from the middle or rolling it up neatly from the end. Just like some of us are naturally inclined to tidily roll up our toothpaste tubes, some of us are naturally on time. We want to remind you that if you’re one of those folks for whom “Island Time” is a way of life, it’s time to come back to the mainland and get scrupulous about watching your watch. Late arrivals are a cause of anxiety in the office as staff eye the clock and wonder if they’re going to get a sub.

To refresh your memory school start times are as follows:

  • High Schools – 8:00 am
  • Middle Schools – 8:45 am
  • Elementary Schools – 9:00 am
Remember, that teaching substitutes should arrive one half hour before the start of school. Thursdays are late start days at most schools, but teaching substitutes should arrive as for a regular day. If you’d like a more comprehensive listing of school start times, including collaboration day scheduling, please download the following PDF for everything you could possibly need to know and more: 06-07SCHOOLTIMESCHEDULE.pdf Please note that (to the best of our knowledge) the times are accurate for 2007-08 school year.

You’ll notice that in these updates we will often provide you with a link to a file that can be found elsewhere on the Spokane Public Schools website. We’re always on the lookout for informative pages that will help you out in the field. If you’re clicking around and find a link to one of our pages that we haven’t noticed, please send it along. While you’re at it, if you are looking for information that doesn’t seem to be there, feel free to send Kate (katem@spokaneschools.org) a request and she’ll move heaven and earth, and hound the district tech geniuses until we get a link built. And, hey, as long as we’re making offers, if there’s information that you think would help you or others which you haven’t been able to find on-line, in your substitute handbook or through our orientation go on ahead and request that too!

As Spokane Public Schools employees, substitutes are eligible to purchase GSL season passes at a reduced price. Those passes are now on available. They can be purchased through Cathy Agrella on the 4th floor of the district administration building or any high school business office. The price is $30 for current employees, substitutes, or retirees and $30 for their spouse/significant other. A maximum of two can be purchased at this price. Price for the general public is $50. Please note that the GSL accepts cash or checks made out to "GSL" but are not set up to accept credit cards.

Cathie keeps saying that she’s got a great feeling about this year. Kate is still scrambling to find school supplies for her kids. Whichever you are this autumn, the “all ready and raring to go” or the “holy cow, where did the time go?” we’re off and running. Welcome to our newly hired subs and a warm welcome back to our old timers, we’re glad you’re here!
