ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM REGISTRATION
About the Newcomer Center The Newcomer Center is a short, intensive, introductory English program for non-English speaking students between the ages of 14 and 21, who have not graduated from high school in any other country and are attending school in the United States for the first time. Immigration happens at all times of the year, and students can register for the Newcomer Center at any time during the school year. Eligible students generally attend the Newcomer Center from the time they register for school until the end of that semester, and then transition to the ELD program in their home high school. The readiness of students to transition is reviewed individually, and students who register within 20 days of the end of a semester usually remain at the Newcomer Center for the next semester. In some cases, non-English speaking 8th graders, who register during the last month of the school year, will also be considered for placement at the Newcomer Center the following fall semester. The Newcomer Center curriculum includes English language instruction with a focus on basic survival English; U.S. culture and geography; and the skills necessary for transitioning into a U.S. high school. Students earn high school credits at the Newcomer Center based on successful completion of school work and the number of days the students attend school. For more information please contact:
