SPRINT is a parent participation program for parents of middle-school students in Spokane Public Schools. The seventh and eighth grade students attend classes at Shaw Middle School.

The program is based on the assumption that parents have the right to be involved in their children’s education, but also the responsibility to provide input for decision making in the program. Teachers, students, and parents work together as a team to help each student achieve his or her potential. Those self-motivated students who are excited by learning through research, observation, and interaction often excel in SPRINT.

SPRINT is a choice. It is a choice by parents to be involved in their children’s school experiences. It is a choice by students to actively participate in a supportive learning environment with integrated subjects.

The History of SPRINT

A group of parents first proposed the idea of a middle school parent participation program in 1985.

Following several years of meetings, research, and proposals, SPRINT was established in the fall of 1989. The program is a dynamic system which changes in response to parent, student, and faculty suggestions and needs.

SPRINT Overview

Although SPRINT students spend most of the day together, they are members of the Shaw Middle School student body. Students choose from electives which include P.E., life skills, industrial arts, reading, art, band, orchestra, and choir. SPRINT students are eligible for the Shaw honor roll. They may participate in school athletics and activities. Students outside the Shaw attendance area furnish their own transportation.

Parent Involvement

Parent participation and involvement, integral parts of the SPRINT program, are critical to its success. Middle School students are more successful when they have their parents’ support and encouragement.

Expectations

Parent and Student

• Communicate with teachers to set goals and to monitor both work and progress.

• Commit to regular and consistent involvement in the program.
• Read and sign their child’s weekly letters home.
• Attend the teachers’ “monthly parent information meetings.”
• Serve on a parent committee.
• Support SPRINT functions and fundraising activities.

Selection and Enrollment

Self-selection is the best process. Students and parents must carefully consider the program requirements and the students’ attributes.

Characteristics of Success

Students are expected to:

• Be highly motivated to learn
• Work on their own without easily getting off task
• Enjoy working on multiple long-term projects
• Have parent(s) who want to be involved

Enrollment Process

• Attend the Orientation Meeting
  The student and parent(s) are expected to attend the SPRINT orientation meeting in April at Shaw Middle School in the Library, 4106 North Cook. Information on the orientation meeting will be sent to all elementary buildings.
• Complete and Return the Application
  A SPRINT application packet must be completed and returned to Shaw Middle School.
• Wait for Notification of Enrollment Status
  After the above steps are completed, the teachers’ recommendations and application information will be reviewed and verified.
• The students’ names will be placed in a pool of potential students. Siblings of current or former SPRINT students will have first preference. If there are more applications than openings, candidates will be placed in a lottery to fill the available openings. Any students not offered placement through the lottery will remain on a waiting list.
• New students will be notified of their enrollment status in late May.
