Skills Support: Students are given assistance
in reading, writing and/or mathematics within the classroom
setting. Programs are individualized for specific student
needs and focus on developmentally appropriate programs.
Individual schools determine the grade levels and subject
areas to be served.
Teachers and Facilitators: These
certificated specialists provide school-based program direction
and supervise the programs delineated in the targeted assistance
and schoolwide plans. They are current with effective,
research-based instructional strategies to provide support
to classroom teachers and program staff. They also facilitate
parent involvement and collaboration activities for staff
in the grade levels served by Title I.
Instructional Assistants:
Title I students are supported by instructional assistants
in basic skills and provided individual and small group instruction.
These assistants are provided with on-going, regular
training in effective practices for at-risk students and are
an integral part of the support services for identified students.
They are also members of the collaborative teams that include
classroom teachers and other program staff.
Parent Liaisons: Title I
students and parents are provided assistance in individualized
programs for identified students through the liaison program.
Liaisons meet regularly with parents to provide them with
books and activities to enhance student success through active
parent involvement. They are also members of the collaborative
teams that include classroom teachers and other program staff.
The Counseling Program: Counseling
services are provided to Title I identified students to assist
with academic achievement by enhancing their self-esteem,
social skills and ability to work productively in the classroom.
Early Childhood Project:
Early Childhood Facilitators are placed into our Title I schools
to provide on-going training and support for staff working
with Title I students. They support and encourage developmentally
appropriate practices, effective instructional strategies,
authentic assessments and collaborative processes.
Reading Recovery: Reading
Recovery is another support program that is in place in each
of our Title I elementary schools in our district. It
is an early intervention program for young readers who are
experiencing difficulty in their first year of reading instruction.
Participating children receive individual lessons from a specially
trained Reading Recovery teacher.
Parent Involvement: Parents
are the first teachers of their children and their involvement
is crucial for successful educational programs. The
Title I program is committed to:
- building a strong partnership between home and school
- providing information to parents about the program
and students
- providing opportunities for parents to assist in their
child's learning
Each school has developed a parent/family involvement
plan that includes a home/school learning compact.
Professional Development: The
Title I program provides monthly inservices for staff that
focus on program management, guidelines, curriculum content,
instructional strategies, sharing of ideas and materials,
parent involvement, in-classroom models, Readers' and Writers'
Workshops, Guided Reading, math strategies and standards,
First Steps, the Reading Continuum, assessments, etc.
In addition, the program has sponsored and co-sponsored several
workshops that include classroom teachers, LAP staff, special
education staff and ESL staff administrators.
