Elementary Library Information

Dear Parents:

Your child spends time every week in the school library.  During that time, he/she is learning many important library skills, as well as hearing and reading quality children’s literature, both fiction and nonfiction.

In addition, teacher librarians work with students and their teachers to support and expand instruction in the areas of science, social studies, reading, writing, and math.  This support comes as teacher librarians help students find additional resources supporting academic achievement and teach the process of research.

The Library Instructional Program includes three strands:

1.            Reading Appreciation

Your child will:

  •  Learn how to choose books and other resources based on his/her interests, assignments and reading levels
  • Experience different types of books including award books
  • Broaden his/her experiences and enjoyment of literature

2.            Research Skills

Your child will:

  • Learn how to find, evaluate, select, and use information from standard resources (e.g., books, magazines)  and electronic resources (e.g., internet)
  • Develop research skills in connection with the classroom curriculum
  • Learn the basics of website evaluation and internet safety

3.            Independent Library User

Your child will:

  • Locate and borrow library books and other materials
  • Care for materials in a responsible manner
  • Return borrowed materials in a timely manner

We are proud of our libraries and are thankful for the opportunity to work with your children.  Please feel free to visit your school library.

Sincerely,
