Mulch Online
Welcome to Mulch, Lewis and Clark’s literary
magazine. Mulch continues a long standing tradition here at LC of honoring
the creative spirit within our student body.
With only a few interruptions, Lewis and Clark has had a student
literary magazine since 1912! This is
the magazine’s sixth year as Mulch. When the seniors in Mr. Lang’s creative
writing class six years ago were given the task of re-creating the publication
and giving it a name, they decided on Mulch,
as it meant a combination, a variety, and something that protected, something
promoted growth and life. For the last
five years, Mulch has received
submissions from more than four hundred students, which can total twelve to
fifteen hundred individual pieces of writing.
Advanced creative students read and evaluate each piece anonymously, and
are always impressed by the level of dedication, talent and enthusiasm they see
in the work. It is often extremely
difficult to narrow such a large field down to forty-five to eighty pieces for
publication. Each year these students outdo themselves as the magazine grows
and improves. They are the reason Mulch has survived.
Mulch is published each spring by the creative writing program, and
we read submissions late in the first semester of the school year. Submissions are accepted October 1 through
January 31, and can be sent to Mr. Lang, in room 221. You may submit up to three poems and/or short
stories. All submissions must be typed,
or emailed to Mr. Lang at andyl@spokaneschools.org in Microsoft Word .doc
format. Please include your year in
school, and the name and room number of your homeroom teacher. You’ll find out if your work has been
accepted when you pick up a copy!
