FITNESS & HEALTH DEPARTMENT
Dear Parents and Students, We feel it is important for you to become familiar with our program in Fitness and Health. Keeping in line with the Washington Academic Learning Requirements and Spokane District’s curriculum for Fitness & Health, fitness is the key component of our program. A student will leave the program understanding: 1) why is it important to be fit, 2) how to become fit, and 3) how to remain fit for the rest of your life. With individualizing fitness as our goal, Lewis and Clark High School will put students through a comprehensive fitness program using heart rate monitors. Part of the student’s grade will be based on the amount of time spent in his/her “target zone.” This valuable information that each heart rate monitor provides, will afford each student the opportunity to learn to exercise according to his/her individual fitness level. With the use of the heart rate monitors, students will be given credit for doing their personal best and will exercise according to what is safe for each individual student’s level of conditioning. To aid in becoming fit, students will have the opportunity to workout in our fitness center and weight room. Fitness students will go through an orientation program which will include learning the benefits of exercise, assessment of each student’s fitness level (resting rate, blood pressure, and body composition), proper use of exercise machines and heart rate monitors and how to keep a fitness log. Student’s will use the fitness center and weight room at least two to three days per week. The remaining time will be spent in physical activities that can be individual or group based, such as pickle ball, badminton, basketball, volleyball, soccer, ect. Classes will be involved in what is called “breakout sessions.” This is a classroom experience where each student will have the opportunity to learn Health and Fitness concepts to help lead a healthier lifestyle. These content sessions will involve written assignments and assessments which can account for up to 30% of the student’s grade. Each student will have the opportunity to do make-ups only for excused absences, locker issues, and failure to meet time in zone. Make-ups will be held every Wednesday morning during student access time from 7:40 to 8:15, and the last two Wednesdays of the month after school from 2:40 to 3:20. A make-up will consist of successfully spending 25 minutes in his/her target heart rate zone. Students can also make up ½ mile runs at 8:00 am every Wednesday during access time in the gym. The half mile runs or an alternative workout are required for grade credit in our classes. Our overall goal is to have each student incorporate fitness into his/her lifestyle that will continue beyond high school years. We ask for your support in achieving the goal. |
