Introduction

Who is responsible for the cold war?

This intriguing question might seem to be easy to answer, but wait—there are many different perspectives on the issue.

As you proceed in this WebQuest, you will be assuming the roles of journalists from a variety of different nations and will examine the causes of the outbreak and development of the cold war.

By looking at many different documents and researching the events surrounding the deterioration of relations between the eastern and western blocs, you will seek to answer the following questions:

1.  What accounts for the outbreak of the cold war?

2.  What are the respective viewpoints of the Americans, the Russians, the Eastern Europeans, and the Western Europeans?

Your final product will be an article written for an historical journal that analyzes the previous questions and recommends a fair assessment of the situation.

We will conclude the unit with a Socratic seminar revolving around these and several other questions.
