Free Response Questions

Although the specific indicators vary from question to question, there are some generic standards that apply to the grading of all FRQ’s. Paying attention to these standards will help you to write better essays and ensure your success in this class.

The Free Response Questions are graded holistically. The extent to which your essay reflects the characteristics of the various categories will determine your essay grade.


Strongest Category (8-9)


1.  Has a clear, well-developed thesis                  
2.  Is well-organized and well-written                 
3.  Addresses the terms of the question              
4.  Provides substantial relevant information in  support of thesis
5.  May contain minor errors—even a 9 may not be flawless


Mixed Category (5-7)


1.  Contains a thesis that may be partially   developed

2.   Supports the thesis with some specific, relevant information

3. Provides some analysis of the question; treatment may be unbalanced

4. May contain errors that do not seriously detract from the quality of the essay

5.  Has acceptable organization and writing


Weaker Category (2-4)


1.  Contains a confused or unfocused thesis or merely restates the question

2.  Provides minimal relevant information or merely states facts

3.  Provides little or no analysis, mostly generalizations; treatment is imbalanced

4.  May contain major errors

5.  May be poorly organized and/or poorly written


Weakest Category (0-1)


1.  Lacks a thesis or simply restates the question

2.  Demonstrates an incompetent or inadequate response

3.  Has little or no understanding of the question

4.  May contain substantial factual errors

5.  Is poorly organized and/or poorly written
