LC War Memorial Project

We are undertaking the task of updating our war memorials to the fallen LC Tigers from World War I & World War II, and creating memorials for Korea and Vietnam. As of December 2007, these are the names we believe should be on our memorials. If you have any changes, corrections, additions or ideas how we can make sure we leave no one off, please contact Theresa Meyer at 354-7000 or email at theresam@spokaneschools.org

August Garcea flew a Republic P47 "Thunderbolt" and was a member of the 365th Fighter Squadron. August flew over 80 combat missions and was awarded the Air Medal with 1st and 2nd Oak Leaf Clusters, and the purple heart. August's Fighter Squadron was awarded the Croiz de Guerre with Palm. August was last seen in a fifteen minute air battle over the Nazi occupied Haguenau Forest. A pilot from the 358th reports: " Lt. Garcea-last seen in dog fight being heavily engaged". In the "dog fight" August's "Thunderbolt" and a German Messerschmitt were locked in a battle of life and death. Reported by other pilots, August's plane was heavily damaged. However, before he went down, he managed to gain advantage on his German adversary and blew him out of the sky! August did survive the crash landing. He sustained severe injuries and with his clothes on fire, he escaped his airplane and ran toward the forest in front of him, only to be hit by German small arms fire. August Garcea will always be remembered by his family as a man that gave his life heroically for his country.

Donald Longfellow was lost at sea in an SBD-5 "Dauntless" because of engine failure while assigned to VMSB-334 of MAG-33.  He went down about 50 miles East of Beaufort, NC on a training mission from Atlantic Field, Marine Corps Air Station, North Carolina at about 1:45 PM on 28 January 1944.  His body was never recovered.

Donald's brother William "Bill" Jess Longfellow, also an LC graduate, was also a pilot in WWII and Korea and served as an Honor Guard to President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Bill served with VMF-214 -- the famous "Black Sheep".  During that assignment, he was awarded the Silver Star in Korea for "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 13 April 1951".  He was credited with destroying 6 antiaircraft positions and numerous enemy troops.  He repeatedly dove on enemy troops even after he had exhausted all of his ammunition.  This was designed to prevent them from capturing a downed pilot from his unit - and the downed crew of the first rescue helicopter, which was also shot down.

He was also awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Korean Presidential Medal (among others). In his Marine career, Bill flew 152 missions.  Most of them were in the Corsair.  Bill survived the wars, served in the State Department, then "retired", returned to college, and became a school teacher.  He was buried with high military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
