Salk Middle School Athletic Center
The Salk Middle School gymnasium addition is just one of the many projects that Spokane voters approved by passing the 2009 school bond. The $332 million district-wide plan includes renovations or modernizations of four elementary schools; completely new ventilation, roofing and flooring upgrades at nine elementaries; safety, security and technology updates for the entire district; and building, field or playground improvements for all schools. Location: Salk Middle School opened in 1961 in northwest Spokane at 6411 N. Alberta, on the corner of Alberta and Francis. The school serves approximately 730 students in grades 7 and 8 who go to Shadle Park or North Central high school for grades 9-12.
Current Facility Size (Approx Square Feet): 18,662 (including locker room areas)
Replacement Facility Size (approx Square Feet): 32,977
Current Site Size (Approx Acres): 18.31
Scope of Project: The Salk gymnasium is the smallest of all five district middle school gyms. As part of the planning and design for the new facility, comprehensive educational specifications for middle schools will be completed. These documents will provide a framework by which teaching, learning and public spaces are described in great detail, and will take into account the demands of today’s curriculum and the incorporation of modern building techniques, technology and systems.
These new specifications will be the standard for future middle school modernizations in coming years, as it becomes necessary to replace and/or update the aging middle school sites.
