6th & 8th Grade - Mrs. Allen
Welcome to Salk Middle School. I am so excited to be your counselor. In 1999, I graduated from Whitworth University with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Psychology and Sociology. In 2002, I completed my Masters of Education in Counseling with an emphasis in School Counseling. I love being a School Counselor. I have worked at both the high school and the middle school for over 13 years. I enjoy the energy and enthusiasm of middle school students and value the opportunities to connect with students, families and the community.
I am so thankful to be a part of Spokane Public Schools. We recognize that each student is unique and all children must prepare for their future. My primary task is to support student achievement through focused counseling activities. My job supports our District's goal to prepare students for successful completion of some form of higher education by providing learning opportunities and access to college and career pathways, while supporting the development of social and emotional skills.
7th Grade - Mrs. Decker
I graduated from Gonzaga University in 1996 with a Master of Arts in Counseling Education and earned my ESA Certification in School Counseling. I spent the first 9 years of my career as a Special Programs Counselor at both Shadle Park and Ferris High School. My experiences in those positions included academic and personal support for all students with Individual Education Plans. I also spent time facilitating programs such as Students Against Destructive Decisions, Washington Drug Free Youth and Peer Mediation.
I spent 10 years as a full time Counselor at Shadle Park High School providing all students in grade 9-12 comprehensive guidance and counseling services in the areas of academic, career and personal/social. My role focused on T-2-4 planning for students and the college application process and I enjoy bringing this knowledge and experience into the middle school.
My goal for all students at the middle school is the development of the necessary skills to successfully transition to high school. My hope for them is to have a growth mindset and a clear understanding of what it takes to be a successful student! I believe that a successful learning environment can be achieved through high expectations, clear goals and collaboration between students, parents, educators and the community. Go Salk Spartans!
Counseling Intern - Mr. Fleming
Hello! I am so grateful to be working with the amazing students and staff at Salk Middle School. I graduated from Whitworth University in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology. After completing my undergraduate degree, I began working towards my Masters of Education in School Counseling at Whitworth University, where I will graduate in the spring of 2021. I now have the opportunity to partner with Raechel and Megan to intern and serve the Salk community this year, and I could not be more excited to get started.
I recognize and take seriously the big role that school plays in the development and well-being of students during the crucial middle school years. One of my passions is really getting to know students and creating an accepting environment in order to help them step into social & emotional health and empowerment. I look forward to assisting students academically by being the support and advocate they need to create an educational environment where they can achieve and succeed in ways that set them up for later academic and career success beyond Salk. My belief is that every student can be successful with holistic care, the right resources, and meaningful relationships. Let’s do this!
