Spokane Public Schools values its rich, diverse schools and communities and is committed to providing excellence for everyone. In order to actualize this mission, we recognize necessity to identify and change the practices and policies that perpetuate systemic racism and other social maladies that broadens opportunity gaps.
The School Board of Directors recognizes the long history of discrimination in the United States that has led to institutional, structural and individual bias, which is inconsistent with the district’s commitment to serving all students. School and community data indicates persistent disparities among students of color and other historically underrepresented students.
In service of a diverse student population, the district's commitment is to honor and value the many customs and traditions present in our community and we are proud to partner with all stakeholders to support mutually beneficial goals.
Recently, SPS adopted an equity resolution to address racial equity. One of the tenets of the resolution is that each school will implement multicultural clubs to support their diverse student populations. Currently, various models are being used within some of our school buildings, and staff, families and student have described them as being helpful and necessary.
The purpose of the multicultural clubs document is to share research around multicultural clubs and the experiential knowledge of many of our staff who have managed clubs within schools to support students. Your feedback will play an important role in drafting revisions for the process to develop multicultural clubs and implementing multicultural clubs at our schools.
