Special Education Eligibility and Identification
Special education is a personalized learning program designed to support students with unique needs. Eligibility for special education within a school setting is determined through an evaluation process. If a child is found eligible, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) is created. The IEP outlines specific goals, modifications, and accommodations to help the child access their free and appropriate public education (FAPE). Special education teachers create specially designed instruction to help the student make progress on their IEP goals and objectives. The aim is to create an educational environment where every child can learn and thrive, regardless of their unique learning profile.
The following steps outline the process for each step of the evaluation and IEP process. The information is taken directly from OSPI and includes links to additional information.
